I recently found out that we are expecting our second child. We already have a 6 year old son and are very excited. BUT 10 days before we found out I signed a 18 month secondment contract to go back on the words in acute mental health nursing starting yesterday. I now need to tell my boss that I will need to take maternity leave after Christmas and I am absolutely shitting myself , I know she won't take the news well.
Any advice on how to bring up the topic with as little anxiety as possible for me

The sooner the better, just to get it out of the way.
Call her in for a chat, just tell her honestly. You didn't know when you signed the contract. Tell her it's still early stages so you're still waiting to announce it until the all clear so please don't spread the news (and that you want to tell everyone). She may want to know whether you were TTC and if you were why didn't you tell her but it is all totally irrelevant! She can't be mad you're pregnant!!
I don't think legally she's aloud to discriminate because your pregnant. Just get it out.
