Hi Sisterhood,
I have 2 children, a 2yo boy and 4.5mo girl.
My 2yo is still not talking properly.
We've just had his hearing tested, which shows no reason for him not to be talking. So now I'm just not to sure where to go from here.
Around 14-15 months he was speaking around 5 words, quite repeatedly. ( eg. Mum, dad, dog, cat fish)
These days I'm lucky to get "Mum" out of him, only when he really wants something.
He tries to talk and gets a range of different sounds out but nothing understandable.
I should also add we read every day and are constantly talking to him about things we see and do.
He communicate with us very well without words and fully understands what we are saying. And can follow instructions.
Just looking for advice from mums with similar experiences, cause I'm just not sure what comes next.
Edit: I currently have him booked to have a Brigance assessment to decide where to go next.

What does the maternal health nurse say? Have you consulted a paediatrician? I'd start from there :)
Thanks. Maternal health referred him for the hearing test. I should have mentioned that maternal health said it could be a
6-8month wait to get it into the local programs that run. (Not sure entirely what they are). She never fully explained. Now she is on annual leave and won't be back for a few weeks.
So a pediatrician might be the way to go.
Thanks again, I appreciate it.
I'd be seeing GP for a referral to a speech therapist and I'd be asking for a referral to a peadiatrician.
Thank you so much, honestly feel like I'm failing him so I want to get on top of it as soon as possible.
Oh and I wouldn't sit around on government programs, they are pretty useless. You want to go private, the money is worth it.
I just want to say that I agree, investigating it is great, but my little guy didn't start talking until he was around 2 1/2 and he is a pretty smart cookie at school. It might be something, it may be nothing. Does he understand what you say and can he take instructions to do a couple of things? Like, put your coat on and get your umbrella? Understanding/comprehending is equally an important indicator of something is up. Good luck.
Thank you so much, it makes me feel better to know that there are other parents out there that have been through the same things.
To answer your questions yeah, He fully understands what I say, and yes he does follow instructions very well. :)
He has hit all of his other milestones without any worry.
All good indicators! My sister was well over 2 when she started to talk (no issues, she is a teacher now) and her son was around 2 1/2 and he is also fine. Her daughter on the other hand, talked quite early and so did I! Maybe I come from a long line of slow talkers lol Some boys take longer, especially if they can communicate their needs without saying them. Best to get it checked, but sometimes they don't do it until they are ready.
