Hi Mummas,
Just wondering if anyone has been in this work situation and how you handled it. I hear this happens all the time.
I've been working in the Public Service for a year now (first ever job, i've come from the private sector). Recently 5 people in my section went for a job not in the same job we do but simlar. 4 of us went for it just to get on the merrit list as we are non ongoing, the 5th was her job. I just found out noone got the actual job but all the other 4 got on the merrit list expect for me. I have been given 4 promtions with better jobs been moved from a 3 to a 4 in that year. I had my performance review and was told only good things not 1 bad.
My manger who told me i didn't make the cut, said she wants to help me get a better job and be my mentor. She wants to help me get a better job in the department. She said i missed just missed out.
How do you go back to your job with a smile knowing your good enough to do your job as a non ongoing but not as a perm. I have just been given one of the biggest jobs in my section that will be mine for the next 12 months but now i feel like i just don't have the heart. I feel like its a kick in the face.
Thanks
Mums x

I would say to myself you've only been there for a year. i don't think anyone would expect this in the private sector on one years work.
It was only a just miss. Your manager has recognised your talents and will help you get there. The fact your manager recognised this is huge. Your manager doesn't have to do this. They have chosen to take time out of there day for you because they recognise your talent.
Public sector is all about ticking certain boxes on certain checklists.
I found that the public sector is all about talking yourself up and scoring in interviews and applications. Making sure you meet all the selection criteria and using buzzwords. And they will often promote those who have been there longer than you. Bit stupid really but I see it time and time again! Don't beat yourself up about it. Sometimes it is a waiting game. I wouldn't think it is a reflection of your performance, it might be that others have been there longer.
In my private sector job I was promoted after 6 1/2 years and manager a year after that. In the public sector my best friend has just achieved her ongoing contract after almost 6 years. She climbed a few levels quite fast as well, but she worked a few more years after that in her current role, re-applying for it every 12 months, before it actually became "her" role.
Patience.
