Help with child lying

Lying

My just turned 6year old has a huge problem with lying.
About anything and everything, whether it be minor such as if she out her clothes in the wash to serious things like others saying terrible things about her or me ect.

Recently she helped herself to my wallet and took a substantial amount of money to school to spend
If it wasn't for her quick thinking teachers I would of lost a lot of money. I got my money returned without my child knowing I knew anything, I asked if they needed to tell me anything and my child blankly lied and said no.

My child is still young, but I believe old enough to know right from wrong when it comes to telling the truth.
It is causing a lot of problems at home and school.
My child has been spoken to and asked why theyfeel the need to lie and they have no answer.
They have been punished with taking rewards away, desert, toys, tv time , still doesn't sink in...
Suggestions?

Does she ever get rewarded for telling the truth and asking for things? Sometimes you have to teach them an alternate behaviour.

I used to sneak/steal things because I thought the answer would always be no, or I wouldn't be heard. So I really wanted to buy a treat or something from the canteen but thought my mum would always say no. Of course I had no concept of money so wether I took 5 or $150 it made no difference to me. So rather than get shot down with an outright no, I ended up resorting to self help.

I also used to lie because the slim chance I'd get away with it was worth being caught in a lie. Does your child get praised for there honesty? Or does your child think they will be in a lot of trouble even if they tell the truth?
