Money

A few years ago I had a debt that I was paying off,3yrs ago asked the company if they can send me paperwork with how much I still owe as I thought it was just about paid. I didn't hear from them, last year I got my credit report and it was clear( no debt marked on my name). Today I got letter in the mail saying I still owe money $20000 which is way more than the original debt. Is there someone I can talk to about this, I'm not sure what to di

Could it be interest?

Have you spoken to them about it? If you're a little unsure do you know someone good with communicating who can talk on your behalf (authority usually scares them into fixing their fuck ups pretty quickly). Hopefully you have receipts or statements showing all payments made and possibly a copy of the original debt repayment agreement showing when the final payment would be? Tell them the same as you've said here, you've made the last payment, tried to get confirmation debt was paid but was ignored and have received proof of a clear credit report which you took as your confirmation the debt was paid. If they insist, offer to hand over your bank statements to the police for a fraud investigation into their business.

It will be interest but also massive debt collector fees and penalties all added on, possibly court costs. Contact them and discuss it find out exactly what it is for. You can negotiate it down and make a payment plan. Especially if you live at the same address and email and phone number and have not received anything from them until now. If you still dont agree keep fighting it until they take you to court.
