My son spends weekends with his father and everytime he returns to me he becomes shy and afraid of familiar people.
He has become more "internal" since spending time with dad
What could be going on?
I'm worrying overtime!
My son was never shy of the familiar people he would run and give them a hug or say hi to them and now he hides behind me and goes shy and doesn't want to see them.
He's turning 5 and has always been a confident loving outgoing child!
But since contact with dad this is how he behaves around familiar people

Sounds like his dad could be speaking negatively about them or trying to turn him against them.
My daughters dad did just that until he went too far one day and made a very serious and very false allegation against me and police had to get involved.
Coming from a mum of a kiddo about this age - it could just be a phase. My daughter is picky about people, even familiar ones, depending on the setting.
Let him warm up to people, allow him to come to them in his own time. Attempts to force him to interact may be stressful and make things worse.
