Lego ....

I'm just wandering what everyone's opinion on age appropriateness of Lego . I have a 5yo who has become interested and loves it . I also have a 3yo and a 1 yo . I'm allowing it to be played with only under close supervision and only if it remains on the special Matt we have

But my husband does not agree :-/ he thinks they shouldn't have it at all until our youngest is 5 (our oldest would then be 9 before he could play with it )
Am I being too lenient ? Or is he being too hard ? Or neither ?

He is being too hard!
Yes it's a choking hazard but there are a 1000 choking hazards in the home that you probably don't closely supervise, including food! Apples are a choking hazard for young children, would he say the 5 year old can't eat an apple because of the 1year old?

If he is really concerned, get a play pen, put the Lego in the playpen and your eldest can play with it there, or in his room with the door closed.

I think it's ok when supervised.
I have a 5 and 2 yr old.

5 yr old is only allowed to play on a Matt in his bedroom with door shut or when 2yr old asleep.

He knows that if a single piece of Lego is off the Matt I will throw it all out

LEGO IS THE BEST!!!!!! Its my older kids favorite thing! They are lego enthusiasts!
My kids are 7, 3.5 and the baby just turned 1. The oldest has had the little lego since he was 4.
The things our eldest makes is just amazing. Its so great in the way it encourages creativity and its really helped with our 3 year old creativity and fine motor skills (he had zero interest in being creative before lego).

So our two older children play lego for hours every day! They are playing it right now. They have a 52lt tub and its almost full. They don't eat it. We have a rule that it has to stay in the bedroom because our 1 year old puts everything in his mouth.
They follow this rule fairly well. Occasionally I'll find the minifigures set up for some battle on the kitchen bench or table. But honestly its just such a wonderful toy, that why its been around for years and years! My boys actually play with the lego their 45 year old uncle had when he was little when they go to his house. It just lasts forever!

Oh my son loves lego. For his 6th bday i bought him this massive ship the age on it was 8 to 12 so i figured he might need some help. He refused the help and assembled it in 5hrs. He loves building all sorts of different things. Our youngest has now started to build aswell his 2.5yrs. We have never had an issue with choking, in their mouth ect.

I would buy duplo blocks until the others are older they are bigger but that just makes it better to build big things if he is more advanced though and wants something a little more challenging set rules about only using it in one room and if it's taken away from that room there will be punishment because it dangerous for the little ones

Duplo gets very old very quickly for older boys. We have a massive tub of it and it rarely gets played with. Only our 1 year old sometimes.

Imagine how much your oldest would resent his siblings for not being able to have something he wants to play with because they're too young. I can understand having to keep it away from the younger kids but your husband is being unreasonable. Instead of the mat I had a clamshell pool, I only have one child and he's outgrown it now (still has all of his lego though) and all lego had to stay in the confines of the pool or its plastic storage tub just to save my delicate feet.

Think of it like this.

Your husband has 2 younger siblings. He's not allowed to drink alcohol until his youngest sibling is old enough to. Sounds crazy right.

It's not your oldests fault he was born first. I've just gotten my 7 & 5yo beads to make jewelry (they have 2 younger siblings), I've avoided things like that because I've always had babies here and I didn't want choking hazards. Then I thought, well that's not fair my older 2 miss out on the joy of making beaded jewellery. I got some for their birthdays and they absolutely loved it..
