Hey - I grew up in Dalby and now live in Toowoomba. As a teenager I hated Dalby, but I think that is just being a teenager! It's a large rural town, but have quite a few modern shops like McDonalds. I think there are 2 (could be one) aged care facilities there, I would recommend giving them a call. The schools are very good. Toowoomba is a beautiful place to raise kids. I have heard that the rental market is flooded, as in way too many rentals for applications, so the rent has gone down and real estates are chasing renters. It has w high population of older people and heaps of aged care facilities. If you have kids, schools are zoned publically. Best wishes for your move!

Everywhere outside Toowoomba is cheap (except Highfields) and there's a lot of small towns around where living is cheap but are close enough for an acceptable commute to the city. We're half an hour away so we have a good size block (1/2 acre, don't see many of them in the city) plus schools, pubs, supermarkets, newsagent, servos, cafes, bakeries, mechanics etc. There's room for vegie gardens and free-range chooks, a dog or two will have room to run, your neighbour isn't on your boundary fence. The cons, there's no real competition for anything out here so we end up paying a little more for services but our power bill is under $200 a month even with the air-con on so it's not extreme. There's a lot of mobile black spots so go and check out where you're looking at to see if your phone works. See what internet connection is available (and that there is actually ports available). I grew up in cities, now I've lived out here for over 20 years and I'd never go back to the rat race.

I live in Toowoomba. There is a lot of smaller places around, Oakey has reasonable rent and isn't far to get into Toowoomba. If you ask the real estate agents will be honest about better areas for families and which areas to avoid.
Suburbs to avoid in Toowoomba are Harlaxton, Wilsonton Heights, parts of Harristown and parts of Newtown.
There are quite a few aged care places, maybe make enquiries and apply now to ensure you would have work. I personally wouldn't live in Dalby as I feel it's too far to do the things I like to do in Toowoomba, such as shopping, kids do dance, swimming, starting football etc etc where as Oakey isn't too far from all of that if you wanted cheaper rent. They also have Oakey hospital which is mostly aged care or only a short trip in Toowoomba for work.

Have a look at the bottom of the toowoomba range like gatton or laidley (lockyer valley). That way your not to far from toowoomba or ipswich to find work. Rent is cheap in both gatton and laidley
