Separated defence families

This is a question for defence families that have gone through separation

How did you divide the care of the child(ren) when you have one parent in the defence going away a few times a year? Did it effect your child(ren)? If so how? If not why?

Of course the ages of the children, location, the split itself etc would come into consideration.
