HELP! How do I find more friends?

I would really like some suggestions...

I am 35 and work for myself, from home. So I spend all day by myself, and by the evenings, am like a puppy waiting for my owner to come home. I am totally starved of human contact.

I work from coffee shops, I get out as much as I can but I only really have 1 good friend and I feel like I'm putting too much pressure on them to spend time with me. And when they don't - the isolation is fairly harrowing.

I can spend time alone (I do it all day) so its not that... its just that I'm a reasonably social person and would love to be able to share and interact with more people.

I have 3 kids under 10 and am a single parent on a week on / week off arrangement...

I want to be able to meet some friends at the pub for a drink on a friday night, or catch up with a friend for a movie on a tuesday night...

... but I don't know how to go about actually making more friends!

Does anyone have any ideas? Has anyone successfully been able to do it for themselves and how?

I live in Cairns, Qld.

I was born in cairns and have never lived anywhere else. I am 31 with two small children the eldest is 4. I too work from home and feel lonely at times. I only really have one friend I talk to regularly. Cairns is an extremely hard place to make friends I've found, very clicky. Unfortunately I can't help you out with the going out thing sorry :( my little one is breastfed still so I can't leave her. I wish you luck. And I don't think your friend would be annoyed by you I am sure she values your friendship.

Hobby groups! Take art classes, wine tasting evenings, learn to play golf or netball etc, photography classes, anything that floats your boat. This will put you in close vicinity with people who at least share a common interest.
