Tax and PPL

Hey!

Ive been researching but cant find information i need so im hoping some others may have some knowledge :)

I am currently on mat leave. Worked 10/12 months of the financial year and been on PPL for the other 2.
I have been told that i should receive back most of the tax i pay on my PPL which is about 100 p/w. However, i am unsure if that's how it works because i thought it was the same as being taxed on income? Did people find their tax return to be larger when having paid tax on PPL or did it remain about the same?

Can anyone with some experience provide some information for me? Tia!

It depends on what your income was before ppl
So just say you were on a high income bracket and paid say $300 a wk tax then it dropped to $100 a wk, the Ato average out your income for the full year and whatever bracket you fall into means you may get more back.

If you know how much you received in your job for the 10 mths, add that together with the ppl for 2 mths, divide by 52 wks and look at the Ato wkly tax withholding form to see what you should pay a week and that will show if you've over paid it

It's treated the same as any income. There are no discounts for maternity leave. The ATO will tax your annual income as a whole. You may get more back if your maternity leave payment is lower than your regular income but only because your income is lower and you may come into a lower tax bracket. I hope that makes sense.
