Toddler bowel movements

Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding bowel movements in toddlers.

I have had an almost 3yr old in my care for about a month now and I can't manage to firm up his poo's, they are constantly runny and he often has explosions out of his nappy. He wakes every morning with a soiled nappy and I'm scared shitless (pardon the pun lol) at toilet training and the mess I will have to clean every morning! I feel he's almost ready to start. He does approx 3 poo's a day all in the first 4 hours of the day.

It doesn't seem to matter what I feed him the stools stay the same consistentsy so I don't think it's an intolerance to a particular food although I'm obviously not a dr and I will get him checked out if I can't get it under control myself.

He's a good eater and he eats wheatbix with banana for breakfast, fruit or yoghurt for morning tea, a toasted ham, salad sanga for lunch or omelette and fruit again for arvo snack and meat/veg for dinner. He has little to no sugar and no sweets in his diet. I have tried to give him rice crackers, corn wheels etc but he isn't interested.

I guess my question is, does this seem normal to you? Has your child had this issue and how did you eleveate the problem? Thanks in advance!

Normally a 2-3 year old would have normal sausage like bowel movements and not having explosive poos.
I'd be consulting a doctor.

See a doctor he may have lactose intolerance, possibly needs to try lactose free for a month to see if his stomach heals. Doctor will also test for any bacteria to rule out an infection.

He may have an intolerance to dairy, gluten or lactose, or juices. It's always best to get them checked out by a doctor. Both of my boys were Lacoste intolerant and I got them lactose free milk and everything firmed up. But each individual child is different. You can also get lactose free cream, yoghurts, cheeses etc please go to the doctor.

Go to your GP and potentially a dietitian (APD) :)

Hi IM. You are doing a great job already! You've said you've got Mr 3 in your care (foster?) not knowing any of the background (if he's just come into care, or moved placements) it can take a couple of months for their little bodies to adjust. Please go to the doctor if you are still concerned. Some background issues could be arising, not knowing medical history doesn't help in these situations, he mightn't have had a great diet before he came to you and his body is getting used to the different foods. If he is having milk before bed, that might be the think to look at first to try and help with the night time poosplosion
Hope you get it sorted mumma! You are awesome for doing what you are doing ?

After reading some of the other people's responses I would agree with them. You mentioned he has banana for breakfast, my LG aged 22 month, has always had problems with banana's, she loves them, can't walk past a shop that sells them without her asking for one, but her nappies are awful after them. I don't know if that was mentioned, but just something else to consider. If she doesn't eat them for few days her pro's change altogether.
