2 year old throwing things

This is driving me bonkers. My 2 year old keeps throwing everything he can get his hands on. He has recently broken 8 of his toys! We have tried telling him no, distracting him, telling him to be gentle, smacking (not interested in peoples opinion on this one. Our child, our choice. He is NOT abused), taking toys off of him and so on. He is very smart and catches onto what we are doing very quickly.
Today we were playing trucks and he threw his truck at my head smacking me just above my eye. I look like ive been punched.
He is not autistic, he does not have add/adhd and so on. He is a normally, happy little boy, with an excellent diet, plenty of play time/outings and finds it funny to through things, especially at his mother's head.

**he got very upset when he saw i was hurt. He started crying, gave me cuddles, kissed my head, patted my back and said sorry. He knows what he did was wrong. But 30mins later he was back throwing his toys

My son did the same thing at around the same age, I had a big container that everything that he threw got put into for a couple of days (sometimes he would have no toys to play with) I made sure I told him why I had taken them off him, It took awhile but he learned to stop throwing them.
