Tell me about NZ

Any kiwis (living in NZ) on here?? After 4 years of living in this beautiful country we have decided to migrate back to NZ. The distance from family has gotten too much now, nobody is getting any younger and I feel our children are missing out on so much family and memories like I uhad growing up. Kiddies are nearly 5 nearly 2 and another nearly 2. Obviously we have a few concerns, mostly surrounding financial issues so have come here to ask a few questions.

First one being is it possible these days to survive in NZ as a one income family? I will be looking into working once there (another bonus of having family support) but am unsure of what's available as far as daycare and things go.

We are most likely going to be heading to Christchurch as that seems to be where there is a fair amount of work in my partners field (excavator operator) The rent there is absolutely shocking I see, not much can be done about that though.

Do you still get Working for Families? Is it at all helpful?

Really excited but so nervous! Will be a big move and we are bringing a container over with all our belongings and vehicle so at least we won't be starting from scratch.

Can anyone tell me what its like there now? Are we making a terrible decision? Lol, I know no one can tell me that.

Thanks ladies

I'm a kiwi.... although we are in the North Island, not the South. We have some family in Christchurch and the cost of living there is comparable to here. So yes, it's definitely possible to make ends meet on one income (we do), however the general cost of living in relation to wages/salary I perhaps a bit higher than in Australia.
Depending on your husbands income, you *may* receive a childcare subsidy for your younger child, and if not, you'll qualify for the 20 free hours a week kindy/daycare once that child turns 3. The cost of daycare for a 2 year old varies of course, but you may be looking at around $6-$7 an hour without a subsidy. If you're looking at putting your wee one into care, ring around because there are a couple of daycare facilities in my town that offer the 20 free hours to two year olds also (not sure how that works, but is worth looking into). You'll probably also qualify for something through Working For Families.
Rental properties are expensive in NZ, and in short supply in most of the main centre's. If you have family to stay with there will be less pressure and you'll hopefully be able to find the right place for the right price.
Christchurch is a beautiful place, despite the quakes, and given the way you feel in your current living situation, I'm sure you'll be able to make it work if it means you're happier.

All the best!
