My 2 year old is starting to hit when he is cranky. He doesn't talk well so I can't explain "you dont do that etc." Any tips on how to get him to understand it is naughty?
My 2 year old is starting to hit when he is cranky. He doesn't talk well so I can't explain "you dont do that etc." Any tips on how to get him to understand it is naughty?

My favourite was blocking the hit and saying 'no'
They understand more than we give them credit for; even if he doesn't speak well, I'll bet he understands what you say. Give him words to name his feelings while stopping the hit (catch his hand): "You are angry that I wouldn't let you do xyz. It's okay to be angry but I will not let you hit."
Help him find ways of dealing with his feelings that are acceptable (remember it's the behaviour you're trying to change, not the emotion behind it). My daughter and I do three roars like a tiger together, or stamp our feet a few times. Often that gets her giggling and then we can have a hug. Kids need to be taught how to deal with those big feelings, not just stopped from acting out.
