Hi Ladies! Just after personal experiences with the Mirena. I have bipolar disorder, my body doesn't process the hormones in the pill very well, my doctor tells me I was on the pill with the lowest amount of hormone so obviously changing pills isn't an option. I've had the Implanon as well, again not good. Doc tells me Mirena is basically my only option, however I'm a little paranoid after my mums fused to her uterine wall.
So tell me, have you had it? What are your thoughts?

As someone who has had similar experience on pills, Implanon etc I would be hesitant to go down a route that I had no control over. I'm about to try the Nuvaring for this reason. Completely controlled by me.
I currently have it. I have used Implanon (made me bleed for 6 months before they removed it) used the pill, depoprovera and now the mirena.
I have it to treat or more so stop my cycle to minimise the symptoms of endometriosis.
the Mirena was Painful to have put in, and I had months of braxton hicks with my body trying to expell it. can't tell you about removal, we aren't there yet
there are other pills and other hormones its not all about dose so I don't know why he told you that.
its working kind of sort of. as time progresses im getting less break through, there aren't the mood swings and side effects that came with the Implanon and depo.
the depo worked faster to stop my cycle but in the end was wearing off a month early and left me with a donkey kick of a 3 month long period as if my body was playing catch up.
it seems to not release as much hormones. it isn't stopping the more complex symptoms from the endo such as the impact on my respiratory system and my immune system. on depo I never got sick or got asthma, the mirena just doesn't cut it in that regard so it must be releasing less hormone.
I haven't tried the Mirena, have tried the Nuva-ring. Loved it, loved that I could take it out myself if there were any side effects. Which there weren't. I'd had dreadful reactions to pills and the implanon (tried to jump off a building). If the Nuva ring is an option I'd try that first.
I love it! I have had it twice. Each I bleed for acouple of months. Now I'm period and worry free ?. My hubby just needs to take his jocks off and I am pregnant except when on the mirena.
I love mine, I had to have the first remove it dislodged after a bad lot of gastro but it was easily replaced. Hubby is getting the snip if we don't want another child in 4years.
I got a Mirena put in about 4 months ago. Insertion was super quick and easy, had it done at the same time as a pap smear and it only took an extra minute. A bit uncomfortable but it was so quick that it was over before I could really get too bothered. I did have cramping for a few days afterwards. I had some depression with some brands of the pill, and I hated Implanon because I had constant bleeding and terrible acne. But so far the Mirena has been good. My periods are getting much lighter, I'm not feeling any change in my mood, and my weight and skin are unchanged. The small amount of progesterone released by Mirena only acts locally - it doesn't result in the same sort of high levels of hormone in your blood stream travelling around your whole body. So in my opinion it's worth a try, as it's easily removed if you don't like it (well, it's usually no problem to remove it anyway, your poor mum!). The other options are a copper IUD (no hormones) or the Nuva Ring (you insert it yourself and it sits up near your cervix for 3 weeks, then you remove it yourself and insert another a week later. It has low dose of progesterone too, which acts locally like the Mirena. It might suit you better because you don't have to worry about it fusing like your mum's did). Good luck xo
I've had a Mirena in for the past 8 years (I have had it changes due to expiry dates). For the first 4 months my period was all over the place, but as I hadn't really stopped bleeding from the time I gave birth it didn't really bother me, since my period stopped 4 month after having it inserted I have never had a period, though if under extreme stress I do get light bleeding with is something that used to happen before hand. While I have gained weight (something I did NEED to do as I got extremely sick after a traumatic birth then had a very difficult baby) I have gained 25KGS, and no matter what I do I cant lose it.
I hated it. I had regular migraines (never had one before haven't had one since it was removed), back pain was way worse, periods were all over the place, really heavy and long, sometimes just a few days between. Hair loss, weight gain, depression (to the point of suicidal thoughts) and insane ranting and crying at night at my hubby about how I was useless and they're all better off without me. There were times when the only thing that stopped me from driving my car off the road and in to a wall was the fact that I always had at least one child with me. The string went in to my uterus and wrapped around it so I needed a D&C under a general anesthetic to remove it but felt INSTANTLY better when it was, even with the drug haze.
I got it put in and bled almost non stop for 8 months (light spotting) and then when it finally settled (the ob convinced me to leave it longer and wait out the "break through bleeding") found sex was uncomfortable/painful. If you have any other options I would take them.
