Gestational Diabetes

Gestational Diabetes

Hi IM's
I am currently 36 weeks pregnant and have gestational diabetes, i thought i had been doing really well but now am not so sure and was hoping to get some advice from those who have been pregnant with gestational diabetes or from someone who knows alot about it.
bit of a quick run down i don't have any of the standard traits that qualify for GD ie: im not over weight etc the only thing i can think of is that im over 30 so that may be the reason why i have GD with this pregnancy and i never had it with any previous pregnancies. When i did the glucose test i was only one point over putting me into the GD range, so now every day four times a day {upon rising, and then every two hours after eating} i have to do a blood sugar test to keep track that i am keeping my sugar levels down, i have cut out mostly all sugar {still have some in my cup of tea, i dont eat any sweats except the occasional 1x lemon lime and bitters drink when we go out for dinner - rarely, i was still eating fruit but have since cut back alot which is extremely hard for me, and try my hardest to moderate my carbs} so heres the part that confuses me, i thought i was doing really well, i work full time and have other children and a house hold to run so for me quick and easy meals are the best, hubby has been great cooking for me healthy meals with lots of veg when hes home, but if im on lunch at work and haven't got anything ill run over and get a subway or salad sandwich on multi grain would take my blood sugar test two hours later and be under my limit {i have to be under 6.9} however recently i was curious and took my blood sugar test straight away and my sugar level was quiet high, two hours later its back down and fine and under what it should be im confused is my Blood sugar level suppose to stay under 6.9 the whole time from the time i eat until i take my test and never exceed 6.9 or is it normal for it to rise high straight after eating as long as it drops within 2 hours....... this morning i ran out of my breakfast so i had two pieces of toast one Vegemite one peanut butter and on white bread 2 x slices {which i usually try and avoid} again just out of curiosity i took test within say 5-10 mins from eating it was well above the 6.9 2 and half hours later it had dropped right down to like 4, i had not done any exercise in that time only gone and done groceries and then home so cant see it burning off.im worried ive been doing it wrong this whole time, and eating things i shouldn't have {too much carbs} thinking it was safe based on the levels i was getting 2 hours after eating,
im not sure if my levels are suppose to stay under 6,9 the whole time from eating or if its normal to rise straight away and then drop within 2 hours...... {hope that makes sense} i am now quiet worried ive done it wrong all along and my baby is going to be really big and something could go wrong. i have an ultra sound next Friday so they can check bub to see if there is any excess weight around tummy and shoulders and to get an approximate idea of birth weight.{this is routine for mums with GD}
my last babies were on the small- average size at birth, and i really hope i haven't put this baby at risk of having a large birth weight or complications, so can any one tell me if i am doing it right or not? also those who did have GD how many had babies that had large birth weights? also to add i notice when i do eat things like white bread or anything that gives me high BS level i feel really sick and giddy, is this normal also? i really haven't put on alot of weight in this pregnancy unlike my last pregnancy's, i do plan on speaking to my midwife at my next appointment to clarify all this with her but she is on holidays atm and i wont see another one until next week, and i know its only a week until my scan but now im going to be stressing for the whole week worrying about everything im eating and likely testing my BS every minute.
sorry for the long post i hope it makes sense and thanks in advance for any advice

Can you speak to your local pharmacist in the meantime? They have a lot of knowledge on diabetes. Otherwise make an appointment with your GP. I think it's important to ease your stress levels with correct information and this won't get posted to Facebook for at least a week.

i agree your gp is best person to ask. everyones blood sugar fluctuates throughout the day, some more than other's just because you have GD doesn't mean you arent producing any insulin at all. it is exactly this reason that the tests done by the pathologist are structured the way they are.

my husbands actually does the opposite 2 hours after eating his blood sugar goes below 4 and he has seizures because his body over reacts to the amount of sugar and he produces too big a hit of insulin.

if your's is doing this which it seems from what you are saying it may be, you may be better off having smaller more frequent meals. but the pharmacy should be able to let you know if not your GP

I had GD during my first pregnancy, but not my second. They get you to test you BSL two hours after eating to make sure the level had come down again, so you are doing it all right on that side. By testing straight after eating the results may be high as your body hasn't had time to adjust for the new food - like I said, there is a reason for testing after two hours, not immediately after eating.
As for GD affecting the birth size of your bub, my first was 3.02kg and 9 days early (natural labour) and I had put on 17kg (much of that was fluid retention from pre-eclampsia). My second (no GD) was 3 days early and 3.190kg (I had put on 9kg)
Other than my personal experience, I can give no information, and I suggest you do speak to your Dr or midwife at your next appointment, but hopefully this will ease your worries until you can speak to an expert. Good luck Mumma :)

Im 24 yrs old not over weight an was actively healthy before being pregnant. I just had my baby almost 3 months ago and i had gestational diabetes... Its just something that happens, i also have another child and didnt have gd with her... also my partner has type 1 so i got a lot of help from him with it all.

First thing i can do to advise you is don't obsess over your suger levels!!

Second thing is your sugar levels are always going to be higher just after you have eaten and go down around 2 hours after you have eaten, thats when your sugar levels count the most and need to be below 7.0..

When i had it i cut out potatoes, noodles, pasta, breads (including pizza, kababs, wraps, sandwiches and all that) sugary fruits like apples, grapes and strawberries. And started looking at the carb content before buying any foods, usually anything under 50g per a serv wouldn't bring my sugers up too hight, i was on insulin during the day 3 times a day and long lastjng at night because i woke up with higher sugers then after eating.

You'll be ok :) your sugars will be normal after bubs is born and if you keep it below 10 it dosent really pass on to the bubz s/he will definitely be bigger my son was born at 36+5 and weighed 7lbs 2oz my daughter way 6lb 6oz when born at full term..
