Two and a half year old being violent

My two and a half year old has become quite violent at day care. He goes to family day care and loves going there (doesn't mind being dropped off and doesn't want to leave) but he has become increasing aggressive towards the other children who are around his age and size, a boy and two girls.

He isn't like this at home - every now and then he might hit someone but we go mad on him, send him to his room, etc - and he always comes and says sorry.

But today he has split a child's nose open and it possibly requires stitches. I just don't know what to do about it. He doesn't see this type of thing at home, we've limited what tv shows he watches (he likes cars and Disney really...)

But other than that I am at a loss. Any advice would be welcome! TIA

What happens when he isn't around those two kids? It might be situational? Can he go into another daycare room for a week to see if it's more of a personality clash between the kids?
Also other there any common denominators that make these kids susceptible, teaching him a different way to react to what sets him off will be far more effective than any punishment.
