Gastric bypass

Gastric bypass

I am struggling with pcos, infertility and weight. Over the last few years there have been a few cancer scares, low liver functions, miscarriages and heartbreak.

My weight has continued to creep on despite following a strict low sugar, low carb diet. Unfortunately hormone swings have made it hard not to break out the chocolate AND fertility medication side effects are weight gain.

So with all this in mind, I have listened to my team of doctors and specialists and am going to have a gastric bypass. I have to lose 24kg before thy will do it though. I just feel so overwhelmed and defeated before I start - I have a voice in my head that keeps saying "you couldn't get pregnant, you couldn't keep a baby, you just can't do anything. You'll fail at this too."

I do see a psychologist but how do I do this?

One hour at a time honey, break it down. Make sure you work on those reasons why you eat otherwise you will sabotage yourself. So if you emotionally eat you'll need to find a replacement behaviour, and it can be hard to recognise. Once I worked on my why(s) things for much easier. Make sure you set yourself up for success, so none of your trigger foods in the house. I find if they aren't available it's much much easier. So clear out any stashes of junk food you have and maybe start doing food shopping online so there are no spur of the moment buys.
I find it easier having a good routine, and meal planning at the start if the week also helps. I basically eat the same thing for breakfast and lunch most days (it's food I love) but it also means I'm not spontaneously making something unhealthy because it's routine, it's habit. Learn to treat yourself with non food items, massage, long shower, facial, what ever it is you like.

OP here
My eating is fine. I don't over eat and rarely eat anything junky - I have doctors agreeing that my eating is fine. Simply, I have PCOS so my body just can't manage weight, fats or sugars in my system.

I'm not at all worried about my eating behaviours.

I struggle with exercise but that is mostly because the weight makes it difficult.

It is just that voice in my head - I have inferility, I can't even do the basic womanly function, what makes me think I can do this?!

Hi Lovely!!!
First things first well done you for asking for support!!! Speaking from experience it was the hardest thing to do as an obese person!!

I have had the gastric sleeve done in Jan 15... I had a lot of negative thoughts going into it... Things like "I've tried everything else so why should this work!" " it won't matter if you have this surgery you'll still be a fat heffalump" YEP!!! I went through all of these!!!! And many more!!

I think talking to someone about it is the best thing you can do, even if that's just a friend, or family member!!! I spoke to a councillor and she was amazing!!! And I speak quite regularly to my dietician, and she told me that the beauty of the operation is... It does all the work for you!!!

Good luck in your decision, I am always here to chat if you need
XoXo
PS.. You rock!!! Good on you for this choice!! It's amazing and you never look back!!

You should be given a weightloss diet to follow not left to do it yourself. If you have been take some time sit down and plan your meals. Take some strength knowing it will only take a month or so being strict to accomplish a good weightloss to get you closer to the surgery. It wont be any easier after surgery you have to have the strength of mind to do it right. Chocolate is out or it will put you right back where you are. Goodluck.
