To the mum who wrote about her daughter's depression and self harm

I write this on the hopes of shedding some light onto this situation. It's hard seeing your child go through this, I can only imagine how you feel.
I'm 19, and have an almost 5 month old. I have depression and I used to self harm. I've had the suicidal thoughts and at one point I tried to act upon those thoughts.
As some have suggested, perhaps let your daughter speak with the psychologist on her own as she needs to build that trust with them. Although everuthing spoken between them will be confidential, they will inform you immediately if they feel she is at risk. You may find she isn't comfortable opening up with this psychologist and may need to request another one. I went through a few before I found one I could talk to.
Depression is a dark place and there's never an exact reason to why someone would feel that way. I knew I was loved and that people cared, yet I still felt the same way that I did. The self harm is something to worry about; scratches will turn into something deeper and more serious. Please understand this is a release. This is a way for her to make how she feels inside her head, into something more physical. As my old psychologist said to me "people don't drink because they're alcoholics; they're alcoholics because that's their way of dealing with shit in life".
Try offering her rubber bands or ice cubes. These are an alternative. When she feels like self harming, she can snap a rubber band on her wrist or wherever. The sting will help without causing serious harm. It's the same with the ice cubes. Give her a journal or diary, somewhere she can write her thoughts down. Maybe a pet if you don't already have one? She may not feel so alone if she's got a companion. I wish you the best of luck. I hope this helps xx

Your message made me teary.....
It was me who wrote about my beautiful daughter who's heart is breaking and she's in a pit and can't seem to climb out.
As her mother I don't sleep. I sneak into her room to check she hasn't acted on those thoughts. Just to whisper how much we love her and how proud of her we really are.
We spent last Tues at the hospital having a mental health assessment done. She asked us to place her in with others who where the same as her just because she couldn't do it any more. She had a mental health assessment done and she has a Choice Appointment with CAMHS on the 19th Aug.
We live in Canberra....
