5 year old son wont eat

I am hoping someone has some advise or encouragement about my son who is 5 and is not eating much.

When he was younger he was quite fussy however this year he has been a great eater, I got him liking his vegetables, meat (his favorite chicken), and had him trying new things like Sheppard pie with sweet potato. However just recently he has been complaining of food being stuck in his throat. It happened one night and I didnt think much of it, told him to have some water which fixed his issue. SInce then he is always saying something is stuck in his throat- sometimes he is extremely upset about it like he really is scared. He is breating fine, swallows water fine- he may try coughing a little, nothing comes up- then he will suddenly announce its all better. He asked me yesterday during a food stuck in throat incident (a lollie) to take him to the dr (he hates going to the Dr) so this made me think it really isnt just in his head. So I am booked in for Saturday.

Today I gave him pretend medicine, told him I went to the Dr and this will help him feel better (trying to test if this is just fear) he said it worked, but then ate corned beef- chewed it for about 5 mins- never even tried to swallow just spat it out and said the medicine didnt work. However he was fine to eat crackers! It just makes no sense. He is a very worried little boy who questions and worrys about everything and now im worried he isnt getting enough food.

Tonight I told him if he is hungry he can have some weet bix if he will not eat dinner- he had about 2 mouthfuls. Im just so worried about this so looking for any advice or if this has happened to your child!

Perhaps take him to speech pathologist for peace of mind to check his swallow?

I could of written this myself, have the same problem with my now 6yr old ds, we have been going to the child health nurse who has said that because a lot of the food she does like has sugar in it that if she can't taste the sugar she doesn't like it so we have limited anything sugary and not to offer anything else for meals(her words are Australian kids don't go hungry cause the will eat) we have some great days where she will eat everything on her plate or most of it and other days where she won't eat anything.
He could be remembering a time when he had something stuck in his throat, but I would definately take him to the doctor who will be able to give you some ideas or be able to refer you to a speach pathologist
