My fiancé and I have been going through some super rough times together. Basically it's reached a point where I can't take it anymore. We are living with my mother to "save money" but he doesn't pay bills, take out anything for tax, nothing. Spends everything bare smokes and fuel on absolute crap.
I posted previously about my worries with his lying. We had a storage unit with all of our possessions in it. He stopped paying for it so now we have nothing. He lied to me about this for 6 months. This is when I started to question his commitment and everything has just gone down hill from there. I won't go into details.
We have a 10 month old son together and although my mum is more than willing to have the baby and myself here forever, I want to get back on my feet and in our own place as soon as possible.
How much is the single parent payments from Centrelink? I don't want to put my son in daycare and work until he is 3. I will be studying then anyway as I want to become a midwife.
Also, would I be able to apply for a regular house? Or will I have to go through Department of Housing? I would really rather avoid that as they usually aren't in very good areas. What kind of price margin should I look at for houses?
Thank you in advance and sorry for my jumbled, long winded mess of thoughts xx

It is approximately $725.40 a fortnight but on top of that would be FTB's and you could claim rent assistance. So it is not a lot but if you are living at home with your mum is very doable. Centrelink has an online calculator, and the website has all the information. You can rent normal rentals, there are usually very long waits for Department of Housing homes anyway. Most real estate agents take the rule of your rent must not be more than one third of your income. You will also have to take into account care arrangements for your son. As you are unlikely to have 100% of the care of your child if you separate so that can affect your payments. You will also have to claim Child Support payments through the child support payments (which given how you have described the father, he is unlikely to pay) so make sure you agree to the CSA collecting the payments.
Thank you. This had been extremely helpful. I will make an appointment tomorrow. I feel so lost. Like a piece inside my chest is missing. It's hard to breathe. It's made me have a whole new respect for my mother. She did this with my highly disabled brother and myself, when she divorced my father. I've always known it was hard but this pain of loving someone who is just so messed up...
I hear you! Been there, done that. You can do this.
The government is not an atm. I myself work every single day. If you are capable of working, work. I pay way too much tax to have people ask "how much will I get from centrelink? I dont want to work oh and I dont want to live in housing commission" makes my blood boil
