My 8 year old son has just been prescribed Ritalin for adhd. Just want to hear some success stories. He struggles at school with attention and concentration. I'm hoping that this is going to work because it has been a long 4 years of trying everything else before we decided to give Ritalin a go. Thanks

Yes it can make a huge difference for a lot of children, mine included.
It can take awhile to get the dose correct and for some children a different type of drug is better. But basically I noticed a difference very quickly.
I found for my son it helped him be able to use the skills we had previously been attempting to teach him:)
It really depends on the child, we went through years of testing psyc app ect & then another nearly 4 years of experimenting with every medication out there for ADHD with our eldest son! We were ready to give up until they started him on a medication called 'CONCERTA' it was absolutely amazing, straight away we noticed improvement & his teaches at school could not believe the change in him. He was a different child! My hubby has ADHD & he was put on Ritalin all through his childhood/teenage years, he ended up abusing it when he was in high school & was worried sick about our son doing the same. We also didn't want him to be on a drug that made him "zombie like" and spaced out which is what Ritalin done to hubby. But back then they didn't have that many options. A lot of the meds that we tried our son on also gave him 'tics' (like somebody with torrets)& he had horrible night terrors also. But like i said, each child is different, you've got to find what is right for your child, not what other people think. Mum knows what works best as you're around him the most. Good luck with everything hun & I really hope everything works out for the best. If you need to talk to somebody that's been through the same thing I'm here ?
Thank you. Day 1 and I haven't really seen too much change in him to be honest. No side effects so that a good thing. We'll see what tomorrow brings I guess. ?
Maybe it's just taking time for the drug to work, I know with certain meds we tried they took a while till we were able to see whether it was making any difference or not. I was loosing my mind throughout it all! He was punching wholes in walls bashing up his younger brother & sister, we had to put ALL sharp or possibly dangerous objects out of reach & locked away. It was an insane few years to say the least ? you've def gotta have a lot of patience that's for sure! Hope this one works & you get everything under control x ?
I never wanted to put my son on it but in the end had no choice best thing i ever did. The improvement in both behaviour and School work is amazing not to mention how much happier he is.
