Hi ladies!,
Hoping for some positive advice or stories :)
My 25 month old son has barely started to talk. He will say around 5 words clearly, but usually only when promoted. I am starting to become worried that he's not developing any language skills, although he is perfectly capable when it comes to understanding instructions I give him. He does have a dummy, which I have found stops him from chattering.
We are booked in for a hearing test on the 1st of June just to eliminate that as a hindrance.
I am wondering if any other mums and dads out there have gone through this with their little one, and whether or not their language skills developed later on??
Thanks :)

I'd get rid of the dummy. It's the first thing we used to ask parents to do in the speech therapy clinic I worked at. Or only use at night. It's like trying to talk with a mouth full of marbles for a learner.
I would keep prompting the speech eg not hand over a desired item until he attempts to imitate the name of the item. It usually gets speech happening quite quickly if there is no under lying cause. If he seems to have trouble imitating eveb approximations book him into a speech pathologist ASAP.
Keep the dummy for sleeps only and see how that goes. Good on you for following up with the hearing test, I hope he's okay x
Yes at two my daughter could only say a handful of words I expressed my concerns with my gp and he referred us to a developmental peadtrician. The peadtrician checked for everything from autism to ADHD, add, and speech disorders. She was then referred to have her hearing tested and to see a speech therapist. Turns out she had a motor speech disorder. Speech disorders are rear in girls but very common in boys. Some ppl will recommend you wait till they are in school, but I recommend starting at a very young age so the child has caught up the best they can before they start their schooling. We live in WA which is the only state to have specialist school for language if you live in WA I suggest you look into the Language Development Centre schools and start applying for your child for kindy. My daughter has two different issues in speech at the age of 2.5 yrs she could only say around 10 words. It has taken 3.5 yrs of therapy and 1000's of dollars to get her where she is today. Going to a main school in a normal class if you spoke to her today you would never know her struggles. My advise start saving now cos the wait list for public system is resiculouly long to get immediate treatment it's best to go private. Feel free to msg me on fb it you have any questions. I've been through the tunnel your about to start and yes their is light at the end of it.
I've got 3 year old twins and they still aren't at the level they should be at. They've been seeing a speech therapist since they were 2. Even though they still aren't were they should be, she's helped so much! I guess kids just develop at different paces sometimes. I'd suggest going to your gp so they can refer you to someone. That's what I did and all visits are government funded. Good luck!!!
