how do you prepare your kids for the death of the other parent?

my ex is a drug addict. My 3 boys havent seen him for 12 months due to his ice addiction and psychosis it brought on.
I received a call from his mental health worker today....He overdosed at a train station this week and had a seizure. Almost ended up on the tracks. It was late at night. Lucky there was a pso working and called the ambos.
His kidneys are shot, liver not functioning, and he has clots in his heart.
He has discharged himself and is back on the drugs.
Worker wanted to let me know its only a matter a time before he dies :(
I dont know what to do!
They are 16, 11 and 8. They miss their dad but are too scared to see him because they know he is unwell and looks very sick.
Do I talk to them now? Or wait til it happens :(
We have tried everything to get him better over the past 7 years without any luck.
Kids are so distraught about his choices and feel he chose the gear over them.
I feel so shit :(

I'd seek professional help on this one. A counsellor or psychologist can help you do this. Sorry

This would be a very hard choice to make one hand I would want to prepare my kids for the fact that he will die shortly but then on the other hand I wouldn't want to stress them out or make them worry while waiting for him to die. I guess it all depends on how much your children understand his drug addiction. If they understand the drugs are bad and are causing major problems in his body then they may understand that it's only a matter of time. I truly hope it's not too traumatic for your kids.

My partners dad died of an overdose. He had been an alcoholic, addicted to Valium and prescription pain killers for years so his liver was stuffed so he didn't have long anyway but its uncertain whether is was an accident or deliberate. My partner and one of his siblings hadn't spoken to him in a while because they were angry with him. That was 12 years ago and I know it still eats at my partner that he didn't make amends before his dad died. Maybe have a chat with them and let them make the decision.
