How did you handle finances after a split?

My husband and I seperated in February. I am currently in a rental with our children while he lives in our home we own together.
I am paying rent and half the mortgage, rates and insurance.
Basically I have no money left at the end of the week for anything like emergencies, if I have enough at all. I have to take my son to the doctors today and now I'm worried about how I'll pay for medicine.
Background is I may have left the marriage but he initiated the separation with another woman and drugs.
I can't afford to pay the mortgage but I'm scared that he won't pay and the house will be taken by the bank. We have credit card debt and my car is in his name. I feel sick whenever I think about why expenses I might come across and have to make excuses why I can't go out with friends.
I guess what I want to know is how do others do it?
I've got an appointment with a lawyer next week but it could be months to get it sorted.
How did you and your ex handle it?

U have to decided what is important. Legally he should be paying rent thus the mortgage would not be 50/50 he would pay more example mortgage was 1000 rent was 200 so he would pay 700 and u would pay 300. However in my case I decided that, it did not matter he wants the house he could have it. Which he did not pay the mortgage. I filed bankruptcy , I decided quality of life for my kids was more important than house and fancy stuff.. Its now been 4 years in another 12 months I am free of any listing I was bankrupt.. And can buy a new house if I wanted.. However what I have given my kids is a better life spare money to do things and enjoy time together. If he then wants to keep the house he has to buy your share from bankruptcy.. Or file bankruptcy him self. Its a tuff, but in my case everything was in my name credit cards his car ect and he refused to pay his share of any of it. I was negative every month. As I said bankruptcy past, kids happy well adjusted, I am remarried to a wonderful man and would not change anything (but at the time I could barely handle anything). Stay strong and do what is best for kids!!!
