Picky Eaters

Picky Eaters

My nearly 3 year old son, WAS a great eater, now I can barely get him to eat decent amount of anything! Even foods he loves and I know he will eat, he will only have a few bites of and then push the plate away. Only to be climbing in the pantry asking for something to eat 10 mins later! Wanting 'chips' or 'kinder surprises' , ice cream etc....these things are only given to him on special occasions, so it's not like he has them on a regular basis.... I never give in to his requests for these foods especially after he has had next to nothing of his meal....
Today he had 1/2 bowl of porridge, 1/4 Apple muffin, 2 or 3 ritz biscuits and two mouthfuls of pasta.... That's it! I'm so worried he isn't getting enough food/nutrients......as he is extremely active...
Lunch and Dinner time is a nightmare, the amount of food that has been wasted is ridiculous. We have always cooked one meal for the family and he has happily eaten it...
As our son has always been a great eater, I have no idea how to tackle this new 'faze' .
Any tips from other mums would be greatly appreciated as I'm loosing my mind trying to get my son to eat a decent meal. I offer him three meals and two snack times a day... Snacks are always a good two hours before the meal....

Stick to your guns mumma hopefully it's just a phase, my daughter went through it too. If he's hungry he'll eat. Best advice is, the more power you give him and food, the more powerful it becomes. Chill, act like it isn't freaking you out and worrying you, and he should revert back soon. Good luck and stay strong on the snack front!

Let him graze. Cut up veggies, fruit, cheese cubes etc and give him a lunch box he can access in the fridge when he wants food. It is probably a phase but if you're concerned about his nutrition you can help that by allowing him plenty of access to the foods that will give him energy. Allow the treats occasionally, start explaining about what foods fuel his body and which ones are merely for pleasure (treats). Try smoothies packed with fruit, full fat milk and perhaps some spinach (you could call them dinosaur, Ninja Turtle or 'Hulk" smoothies if he's into those things - the spinach doesn't taste of anything, it does turn it green though!)

My son went through the fussy/no eating stage from 3-4. He pretty much ate crap for a year because it was either that or he'd starve! As soon as he turned 5 and starting going to prep he started eating like a machine now he loves his fruit and veg! I think it's just a stage they go through. Good luck!
