How do the single mummies do it.. Working for child care.

Hi IM,
Well I have a 5 year old who is in kindy and I stay at home with my 1 year old, I am going stir crazy and want to start working again. It was a twist of fate I have been offered a job, in something that I love with pretty good pay 1500 per week so I will take home 1200-1300 per week. Now I have looked into childcare the only place available it will cost me for before school and after school for my daughter and long day care for my son $510 per week! And I doubt with earning $3000 before tax a fortnight would make me eligible for help with fee's from centrelink so I am left with even less money than what I would get off centrelink, which I cannot really afford to take too much of a loss. I really want to work as obviously I will gain experience, earn super etc but how do you single working mum's do it? I don't have any support so I have to rely on the childcare system and that 510 a week will be more in the school holiday's as my daughter will need to go during this period. I really don't want to wait another 3-4 years to work. So any pointers or 'hope' stories thanks.

Have u looked into family daycare? It's usually a lot cheaper and your school age child could use it.

Is that full fees or after the government rebate? Rebate is different to child care benefit which is income based. The rebate is 50% off fees for working parents. So my sons daycare is 550 a week but I only pay 275 after rebate.

As you will be working, you will be eligible for the child care rebate which reduces the fees by 50% up to $7500 per year per child. Please look into this and even ask the centre as they would have more information on it.

Family Day Care! My 1 year old goes 3 days a week, I'm a two income family (quite reasonable income) and with the rebate etc I pay $54.50 a week. My daughter loves it and family day care can only have a max of 4 children so you know the care they are getting is exceptional!!! You might be surprised at what you are entitled through from centrelink. Give them a call to discuss your options. Good Luck

You will be able to claim the childcare rebate as you will be working full time. Also look into family day care. Way cheaper and a more home like environment.

That doesn't sound right to me, together my husband and I earn $2000 a week and we are only paying $50 a day for family day care, then every 3 months centrelink gives us half of what we have paid back. I hope you have the facts wrong because if not that is ridiculous. Mums should be encouraged to go back to work not punished!!
