Alcoholism self help

Hi IMs, I have a drinking problem and hope you can give me your non-judgemental advice please how to overcome this. I'm not interested in AA or similar, I'm certain I can do this without going down that path. Its not unusual for me to have half a bottle of red wine a night, often more. I know this is unhealthy and would love to give it away. Thanks for your help xx

Why not AA? Not saying you should but why isn't it an option? It's not like a long term thing you have to commit to like rehab, you can just go for a couple meetings. I only found it helpful because I went and saw other "real" people who made me realize it can effect anyone and also heard all the crazy stories of women getting raped and what not scared the hell out of me. I Would consider myself as having a drinking problem not so sure if I would class myself as an alcoholic as I don't drink every night. But what has helped me is not entering situations where I know I'll drink like obviously parties. I tried not to have wine at all in the house because I knew I'd drink it and if I wanted some I'd have to go to shops to get it which I was usually too tired to do. I also started getting into hobbies, I started reading, I would go on the treadmill every night. I also started looking into why I was drinking? Why do I want to numb myself? I started a diary and started talking to myself in my head about my or problems (as I refuse to talk to a psychologist). I found once I got myself out of the habit of coming home and making a drink it was easier to stay away from.

Go see your GP as they have knowledge in this area. However I highly recommend AA even if it's just to talk to people who are going through the same thing.

Do you know what the triggering feeling or situation that makes you want to drink? if you can work it out then you can start to try and face and resolve that. As for the habit of drinking wine, try sipping on water slowly and make conscious efforts to do something self loving in those times... have a bath, meditate, give yourself a pedicure/manicure, make up a face mask or hair treatment etc.. this has helped me quit smoking weed
