Chewer

My almost 9yo daughter is a chewer. She nibbles on the collar of her tops, her head phone cord, her hair....

My 40yo brother is also a chewer also and he doesn't know how to stop. How do I help my daughter stop

You may not be able to stop her completely. This is a sensory seeking behaviour and a form of stimming that allows her to concentrate. You can buy silicone necklaces specifically designed for chewing. It is an alternative to save shirt collars and other non-chewable items.

A friend got something from the chemist to put on her daughters fingernails , apparently it tastes terrible so they don’t want to bite them off - I wonder if you could put it on clothes ??

My son used to do this. He soaked the front of his shirts. I took him to an Occupational Therapist who diagnosed him as high sensory seeking. He had other things he did as well. The OT was fantastic.

He did grow out of the shirt chewing but even swapping behaviour e.g. chewing gum may help. As a teen I still catch him every so often stimming, he likes to swing his head. He is very bright and is adjusting socially so I have not had to seek any other diagnosis.
