I'm after some advice about cultural appropriation.
I'm trying to raise well-rounded children who have an understanding of different cultures, but I am unsure of where appreciation of another culture crosses into disrespect.
I understand the obvious things like Native American Indian head-dress being reserved for those who have earned it, but what about things like sugar skulls for decoration, or celebrating Kwanzaa?
Does anyone know how and where to draw the line?

In my opinion appreciation is knowing about it or even being interested in learning. Appropriation is picking up the symbol/ icon and using it (possibly with no knowledge or interest of what it is or what it means) just because it looks cool or its in fashion.
As with all cultures being different, id imagine all cultures would care differently about people using their symbols as fashion. Being from a mixed culture family, i tend to teach to look at the intention behind the action. I find most people, on a case by case basis, look more at your friendliness and intent over what you've inadvertently done that might offend their culture. They realise its not your culture & you might not understand. Oh and education, interest and asking questions helps you to know more about what you're doing in any setting.
