Has anyone else noticed that due to covid some hotels will not allow check in til 3pm instead of the previous 2pm? On top of this we have just been notified that they experience delays at check in so aim to come after 3pm and check out is “before” 10am.
Will this just be the new standard.. we just continually get less for higher prices.

I think too many people are too focused on making ends meet or finding a place to live during this rental crisis and can't even afford to stay in a hotel so they aren't thinking of check in/check out times.
Fair enough!
We are being gouged from all directions at the moment.
In general it’s actually because there’s less staff to turn the rooms over. Everywhere is short staffed at the moment, I stayed with a Novotel brand recently and had a chat to the room cleaner and she was saying they previously had 6 staff for morning and 3 for afternoon. Now they have 5 total and can’t seem to recruit. The hotel has been just as busy as before now the borders are open again. They struggle to turn the rooms over and prefer short stay clients then 1 night clients because it’s less to do in the timeframe. She was saying she also works 12hrs now instead of the previous 8.
I can see where they’re coming from, anything that buys their staff more time to do it properly.
It’s a staffing issue. I work in housekeeping in Noosa and the struggle to get staff is real. We are busier then before Covid. It takes a couple of hours to get a room ready for incoming guests especially if that room had departing guests that morning. It’s a sign of the times unfortunately. However our arrival and departure times haven’t changed - 10am & 2pm.
Clearly it's because of short staff, giving cleaners an extra hour to get rooms clean and stretching admin staff out. It might seem like it's done on purpose so you get less services for more money but really that doesn't make sense because the hotel doesn't save money by letting you in an hour later. Their costs are the same.
The last place I stayed at let us in early because our room was ready, not the first time that's happened. Just ask if you can go in at 2 if you really need to
Lack of staff, I presume. I've read many accounts where recruitment is near impossible & part of the blame lies in the massive increase in house/rental prices & transport costs, especially in tourist areas & city centres. The potential staff can no longer afford to live in commute distance to the hotels & hospitality businesses that need them.
I'm more concerned about that long term. After looking at prices last school holidays I've no idea who can afford/will pay the current accomodation prices anyway!
I wish people were this understanding in my profession. People definitely notice and kick up if I shave time off their service!
What do you do? A check in time/check out time isn't really shaving time off a service it's just changed the hours of check in. They could make it 5pm if they really wanted to and have a minimum 2 night stay to really save on cleaning and admin.
By changing the time they have reduced the time. So almost the same thing right.
I’m not interested in getting into a debate.
Retail store that reduced weekend trading hours 12 months ago and nearly every weekend we have people walk in at closing time and start an argument over the changes hours.
Maybe they should do a 2 night minimum. Maybe no one should ever question the loss of value.
Yeah I hate that too, people complaining about a businesses opening hours are so entitled it's up to the business when they open. People like that tried to go to the business once on a Sunday afternoon and complain it's closed even though it would probably cost more to keep open than it would to close.
Been travelling a fair bit this year and I haven't really noticed it much tbh. Usually we've been notified of a delay in checking in and I can understand that. We have family members who work as housekeeping and they are run off their feet every single day and they work in a regional city!!
Look at another venue? Nowhere I've gone has changed. Regardless, your title is in itself recognising that this isn't exactly important. Leave home an our later, or stay another day. If you are fortunate enough to afford to travel, find a way to make it work for you. And maybe give a donation to a local Christmas charity
If I had enough money to be able to travel and stay in a hotel I'd be stoked. An extra hour to check in wouldn't bother me. I'd just go and enjoy the sites.
