Hey y'all
I need hair advise. Firstly my hairdresser is quitting the profession. I've been going to her for 20 years. I have tried others here and there but they just aren't nearly as good so I'm over it.. I'm over the cost (200 a pop) I'm contemplating using supermarket dye cuz it's cheap n I don't want to waste my time and effort with another hairdresser.
Question is are the supermarket dyes as bad as they make our? Should I just go to a hair place (hair house warehouse) and buy the dye? What do ppl do these days?

I order Aromaganics hair dye online much better without the nasty chemicals. Search around and find another home hair dresser. Yes the supermarket dyes are as bad as they say. Also check out davines hair colourists / hair dressers who use Davines colours.
What's bad about them? I've always used them.
Kind of wondering the same thing, how are chemicals from a supermarket dye way worse than the chemicals a hairdresser mixes and puts in. I'm genuinely really curious.
I have had several allergic reactions to the chemicals when I wasn’t aware and have since learnt a lot about the chemicals that are used, by specialists. They also suggest some of the Chemicals are linked to breast cancer. There is quite a few hairdressers I have come across since my reactions who have stopped using certain chemicals in their salons because of their own breast cancer diagnosis. Along with others I know of. With my own experience though, I learnt just how bad these chemicals are. I was told to never put a hair dye near my head again, I am lucky it didn’t affect my breathing but I was in a bad way. I only had several reactions because I thought certain colours may be better and was advised at health shop what to use. They were so wrong and I had my worst reaction. If you look up Phenylenediamine which is banned in some countries in use of hair dyes. It is used in almost All hair dye. Davines and Aromaganics are ppd free. Anyone can have a reaction.

“Quite a few hairdressers with breast cancer diagnosis” urghhhh, the woman with examples for all occasions, should have known. Believe what she says at your own risk.
I am just going by the ones I have met and have spoke to at several salons & their reasons for using these chemical free brands and the reasons behind the companies that have created these brand. I am not saying it does.I’m no scientist. I’m an talking from my own experience. The hair dressing part of it could be coincidence, who knows. Google it. There is many more who have never had it and hopefully never do. when I’m asked question, I have answered only from my own experience to a questioned that was asked. It doesn’t take much to work out how dangerous these chemicals are. They are nasty. These chemicals don’t get banned in some countries for nothing! Google is smart ass and learn something new before opening your mouth.
Yes cheap and nasty mass produced hair dyes are full of nasty chemicals.
I have never had my hair coloured in a salon (I am 53). Can’t justify the cost or the time to sit among gossipy woman. I just go to Just Cuts for a trim every 8 weeks. I have always used box dye and never had an issue. It’s no different to salon dye except for the price they charge to apply it.
This is what I'm thinking. The ammout of money sent on salons is àlot for me... I'm just over it!!! And everyone aways goes on and on about how shit it is for your hair lol. I'm like how different can it really be. Both use chemicals so yeh seems a bit silly...
As a blonde I have to see a hair dresser as blonde hair is so high maintenance but if you're darker, box colours are fine, just stay away from harsh dark colours as the developing times can grab much darker than anticipated and they an look far too harsh and blotchy . Using medium brown's or violets/grapes/purples/reds are the best .
I've always been a blonde but I'm thinking a warm brown colour might be nice
As a brunette, I honestly don't see the difference between what I get at the salon or at home.
I was going to the salon every 6-8 weeks for years to have an all-over dye put in and then when covid came I tried to wait it out but my grey hair got to me and I bought a supermarket dye (garnier) and honestly cannot tell the difference! They last the same amount of time, cover the grey the same (usually only a week before the colour washes off the grey) but I am saving myself $100 every month...which I now spend on shoes and clothes!
I also bought some good quality scissors and cut my own hair now too. I would prefer a hairdresser to that tbh but the stigma of having 'box dye' hair keeps me from going in, so just get around with my lopsided bob😆😆
I've been using box dyes forever.
I had my hair cut and coloured at the salon this year as a birthday treat, I shit you not I get better coverage and longer lasting colour doing it myself at a fraction of the price and I'm spared the agony of sitting in the salon for two hours listening to the hairdressers gossip 😂
However, box dyes aren't fool proof.
They often come out darker than they are meant to. I've had a few mahogany browns turn out full blown goth black, I've also had a few deep reds turn out so bright red they were almost magenta. So my advice would be to pick something subtle and roughly the same shade as your natural colour, if you're tossing up between a few shades go with whichever is lighter because its easier to go darker if you don't like it than it is to go lighter if you don't like it. Follow the instructions precisely and don't forget to do a patch test.
(I'd also avoid the Napro brand, that's the only brand I've ever had an issue with. It gave me chemical burns).
I quit using box dye and opted for developer and tubes of colour from a salon supply store.
I have a few different colours and I think in total, ive spent 200 on them and use them every few months.
to me, it's worth googling and finding a supply store
I’ve used box dye for the last 4 years, so time poor after the birth of my 3rd child 🤦♀️
My best friends a hair dresser- she hates that I use box dye because of the build up in the ends but she has given me great advice on quality product. So yeah I box dye every 4 weeks or so for $20, then spend roughly $100 in the month for top products

I use schwartzkopf colour specialist, I colour my roots using a brush every 4-5 weeks, then only do my lengths ‘as needed’ which is probably only twice a year, so that I don’t get a build up.
I have really dark hair that’s greying, hence the frequency.
My hair is in fantastic condition. Hair dressers make comments that they can’t believe I box colour
