Debt default

Hi ladies
I saw a post about a lady who got into debt thanks to an ex and never knew about it until yrs later but never paid anything...
I too got into debt thanks to an ex, the loan defaulted and went to a debt collector who contacted both of us. I began paying a small amount off and have given all the contact info i have on the ex to get them to chase him for the money.
I stopped paying in 2019, i dont believe ex has made any payments since.
Does this mean that after x amount of yrs (i live in vic) the debt will be gone from my credit file and i wont be hounded again for payments?
Im unable to make any payments due to various personal reasons.
