Probably a little too much TMI but 20 months ago I gave birth to my second child and 5 or so months ago I had the Mirena IUD inserted by my obstetrician. My periods reduced dramatically after a few months to a very light period for three days or so. BUT as soon as my periods stop I instantly get smelly discharge and it lasts until I get my periods again. I’ve seen my doctor about it twice and had urine and swab tests done which keep coming back normal. I am wearing tampons daily because I can’t stand the smell (it’s not foul, more like a sweet/urine smell). My husband has never said he can smell it but it’s seriously messing with my mental health. Has anyone else experienced this???? If so, what did you do? My doctor said it may just be my body and the discharge is normal but I cannot live like this!

Omg I could have written this! Same thing except I gave birth over 8 years ago. Had mirena for over a year and would continually get and would get the most awful smell! Mine was like a fish smell! And mine was noticeable! My kids would be like “ew I can smell fish” they didn’t know it was me obviously but I was mortified! I went to my GP who had a look at my cervix and said it was all looking ok. Sent off some swabs and I have BV. So definite worth looking into.
I am so paranoid about the smell. That’s why I wear tampons but I seriously didn’t even think of the repercussions of wearing them daily and the risk of infections! I’ve had swabs done twice and urine tests twice and both have come back clear for everything. I have an appointment with my gynaecologist in a few weeks for a 6 month check up so I will be speaking to her about it then. x
I am currently dealing with this except I don’t have the mirena!!
I’ve just had swabs done, but came back clear.
I am
About to do a course of thrush treatment to see if it helps. It’s disturbing!!
Also, don’t wear tampons unless you are bleeding. I know how it feels, seriously I do, but just wear liners and change them regularly. I change mine sometimes 5 or 6 times a day!!
Thanks for the heads up about the tampons daily! It didn’t even cross my mind - I just wanted to hide the smell and that was what I used. I wear liners but I can still smell it (no one else may be able to but it makes me feel so uncomfortable). I see my gynaecologist soon so I will be talking to her about it then and hopefully can get some answers. c
I'm 41 years old and I have been smelling bad down there for years now. I've been wearing pantry liners and sometimes thin pads to try and hide the smell since I was at least a teenager. I hate it! I use vagisal wipes EVERY day. I never did go to the doctor to see about the smell and I don't go for my well woman check as often as I should either 😒
When I'm with my boyfriend for some "adult" time, sometimes, I smell myself but he don't seem to notice at all, but I hate it!
I had similar happen but no mirena put in. Turns out I had a rectovaginal fistula (a hole between the vagina and rectum) it was tiny and only able to be detected under EUA (examination under anaesthetic) but it all started after a minor surgery to remove skin tags which caused an internal abscess which then created the fistula.
About 60% of the women in my fistula groups have had theirs caused from childbirth. Mine masked as a serious thrush infection for months before the abscess made itself known (it was the drainage from the abscess which was leaking through into my vagina but not a horrible smell as you’d think because it was early on.)
I wish I had demanded more tests because I have been to hell and back with it. Hopefully it is from the mirena and not a minor internal tear from childbirth turning sinister, but I am overly cautious of these things so please get it checked out again! A CT scan should be able to show it anything is forming internally. Best to rule it out than go through years of discomfort. Good luck!
