Public health - removing adenoids

Hi all,

My son has large adenoids and we are about to book an ENT. Wondering what the wait time is in the public health system to get them removed? We currently don’t have private health so how much would it be to have them removed if we didn’t want to go don’t the public health? Thanks.

If you put down your area you might get a more accurate idea

Your local hospital should be able to give you a general idea on wait times and your ENT can tell you costs if you go private.

Wait times for public hospital is about 3 years. Private will depend on which hospital the surgeon uses. We paid about 2k

It really depends on where you are. I have two boys who both needed grommets within a 6 month period. One went to an ENT closer to home and he had his initial appointment, and operation in a matter of a few months.
My other little boy went to a different ENT (dont ask me why, it was who we were referred to🤦‍♀️) it took months for the intital appointment and two years on the waiting list!! So ENT shop🤣

Definitely go private if you can afford it. ENT is shocking for wait times, plus clinics are over booked, at least here in Brisbane. Although I have to admit clinic times have improved since Covid because they’ve been doing Telehealth appointments as much as possible for followup appointments. My youngest is 14 1/2 and has been seeing ENT since he was a baby due to a unilateral hearing loss. He's had multiple appointments rescheduled over the years due to cancelled clinics, and it’s usually 3-6 months until the next appointment is available. I’ve had to ring and demand he be seen sooner due to multiple appointments being rebooked. I’ve had to take him to appointments sick because I knew it would take so long to get another appointment. That worked in his favour though, as he had severe tonsillitis along with a virus, as it got him on the waiting list to have his tonsils and adenoids removed. It took about 8 months from going on the waiting list to actually getting the surgery done. It’s my understanding that wait times are now worse.

We went private back in august 2021, no private health.
My 11yr old had adenoids, turbinates & a ear cyst removal. About $2500 for the hospital, $2200 for ent, $700 for anaesthetist.
Booked in March for an august surgery date.
Edit: Qld, Brisbane area.
