My husband and I has been separated for a year now. We were married for two until physical abuse started. I am finally in the position to file a divorce, but I dont know where to start. We have a mortgage that he mostly pays, we didn’t sign any prenup prior to the wedding, now I am not concerned too much whether I get a share, but where do I start? Family lawyers? I’m a full time uni student and work two jobs, all of my earnings go to rent and necessities. Is there a cheaper way to get divorced? I am also sponsoring him for citizenship, what will happen now after I file a divorce apart from letting the immigration know? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Some family lawyers offer a one off free appointment. Well worth it, otherwise contact a women’s legal clinic.
You get lost of advise specific for your situation.
You can do a simple online divorce if you like, they cost around $500. But that depends if he is likely to do the right thing regarding the house etc. It’s not just as simple as him just making the payments, if he defaults you can find yourself in world of trouble so it’s important to get your name off of the mortgage even if you don’t want him to buy you out of your equity share.
