Hi all,
I’m struggling to help my teen, her grades started going down in grade 9 she stated she was being bullied so I changed schools. Last year she started at a new private school we struggled to pay for but she made some friends and was happy. Problem is she failed most subjects again we had no idea because she said she was doing well and doing her assessments.
I am at my wits end and don’t know what to do or what our options are, she is now saying she doesn’t want to continue with school.

Tell her to push it though to grade 10, give her some light at the end of the tunnel, then support her finding a job that she’s interested in (I dropped out in grade 10 due to crappy grades - but studied later in life and have 4 diplomas and a bachelor degree which I got mostly distinctions for)
Is it all subjects or some?
Get her some support for the subjects she’s not passing, one would hope that the private school would have a study afternoon for kids struggling (my daughters did). If not maybe consider if financially it’s better to change her back to public and put what you can afford into private tutoring?
Keep in touch with the school regarding her subjects and what’s due and when and how she’s managing. Don’t rely on her self reporting because she’s going to say she’s going great.
Get her eyes tested if needed. My daughter struggled with school and was failing subjects and despite her telling me she could see fine, we got her eyes tested and low and behold she needed reading glasses. Her eyes were getting tired and she was getting headaches (not that she told me that) and once she could see better, she read better and started passing subjects (not fantastically though but she passed).
A very poor performance on the school's behalf especially her teachers for not notifying you, that she was failing.
Here in Qld towards the end of the year our school's have subject selection meeting with year 10 co ordinators, deputy principal's, principal etc to see where student's need help and what they are thinking of studying or working when they complete schooling.
Alternatively we also have 2 trade schools in our area where you learn a trade as well as do the basic of learning to gain senior certificate.
Both my sons have been lucky enough to have had a school who wants the best for each student and tries to help struggling students.
Please exhaust all avenues before allowing her to drop out of school.
All the best x
I have a 16 year old who has just completed year 11 and going to TAFE for year 12 as she too was failing.
With your child it depends on what subjects she is failing? Is it core subjects? If it's math or English, these are extremely hard to get up to scratch with if they have fallen behind especially in the senior years, which is my daughter is going to TAFE now. She was so far behind in maths she wouldn't of been able to pass the OLNA requirement to get get year 12 certificate thus, not pass year 12.
In year 9/10 there is still room to get better, but hard work will need to be implemented, tutors, mentors, study etc.
I don't know about your daughter, but there is no way mine would have done that and applied herself.
Work out the areas she is failing and if its a core subject work out if she is willing to get tutored if it's a flat out no, then there's no point forcing the issue! I'd hunt around for a plan b and see how she fairs through year 10/11
