mediation unaffordable?

The ex has initiated mediation as he is un happy with a decision i have made for our children. (For privacy i wont say what it is, but its not something I can change ...put it that way)

The mediator he has chosen, i'm not able to afford (its a private mediator and costs hundreds and even 1000+ over a series of sessions)

I would happily go if it was affordable. This mediator he has chosen in particular is not affordable for me.

However i don't want them to issue a certificate to him saying that i opted to not attend....as I want to go, but I cannot afford his chosen provider!

Does anyone know or have experience with this sort of thing?

I do and I have to correct legal wording to put in the response letter (my ex did the same). I will come back later today once I have the letter on hand and add the wording for you.

I refer to your correspondence regarding (ex name) proposal to attend mediation with (proposed mediation service providers).

Due to the costs involved and distance from my home I advise it’s not reasonable not suitable for me to attend (proposed mediation services).

Sufficient services are provided at little to no cost in (an area local to both parties) and I have added my name to interrelate current FDR waiting list.

This should not be seen as my refusal to attend mediation as defined by the family law act.

I hope this helps. Legal aid gave me this wording. The most important part is the last sentence.

On another note - as parent who has had to deal with this for 12 years I encourage you to be active with mediation as far as possible. It never looks good to the court if you are not willing to work with them and put the children first. Good luck hun.

I’ll check back in a few days incase you have more questions.

Mediation is much cheaper than court.
