I think it also depends on what you can afford to. Some people 'gourmet' items are more important or preprepped foods might be necessary. We end up spending $200 a week for two of us. My son is 19 and most of the food bill goes on him! He eats a lot but very healthy and not an ounce of fat on him. A small portion is also pet food and kitty litter. We can afford to spend that so do. If we couldn't we would reassess and see where we can cut back.

I spend 200 a week we have 2 adults 3 kids one still in nappies 24/7 and another only at night. I shop every 3 weeks for staples, I'll shop for fruit and veg and milk once a week and then on off weeks I buy pet food, and meat it works for us altho it's hard to keep it tight we also don't have take out or anything like that

There's only 2 people in my family but I easily spend $200 dollars a week on food. For me food is something I really enjoy and like quality, healthy foods. For me it's important and I budget in other areas to be able to afford this. I think I could spend 50 dollars a week and just buy basic foods like bread, rice, cheap meat and veg but I choose spend more. Everyone is different

there were 5 of us and we had 2 in nappies and one on formula, 2 dogs and a cat were paid fortnightly and spent $300 a F/n so roughly $150 a week, we were on minimum wage and could not afford much else. We still had a treat once a week but we had to run a tight ship. it meant no unnecessary extras and we had to watch every dollar we spent. I know a few people who earn a lot of money and spend a lot on their shopping. But what I noticed was they were also the people likely to entertain and wanted to appear like they were wealthy even though some of them were just living way beyond their means. If I could afford to spend more money I probably would.

It's dependant on how much you can afford. There was a stage where I could quite easily spend around $300 a week for two adults, but now we're on a budget I can get our grocery bill (including meat) a fortnight to between $250-300 for two adults, a toddler, a baby in nappies and on formula and a cat. So $350 a week for a family of 5 may be quite acceptable because they may be able to afford it. Doesn't mean it's excessive.

Hi Kat I just wanted to say that's about my weekly budget I have 3 adults and 4 kids (ages 8,7,5 & 20mths) in da house. I try and bake for school, some weeks I go over board cooking other weeks I buy in depending if I need to by meats. I try and buy bulk where I can.

For one adult and one child (2 &1/2) I spend about $350-$400 a fortnight.

it depends on what your family needs. My son has always been a big fruit and vegetables boy and I find light fruit like watermelon keeps his appetite for dinner or lunch.

food is quite expensive here too so for example, I just went to the shops and got:

5 mandarins
4 kiwi fruit
2 small pieces of watermelon
1/2 honeydew melon
2 tubs of strawberries

That cost me just under $25.

that fruit will last about 2-3 days as my son has a small amount of cereal and some fruit for breakfast, strawberries or mandarin, for lunch he has a sandwich and some kiwi fruit or honeydew and in between lunch and dinner he has some watermelon and occasionally he has fruit between breakfast and lunch depending on how much he ate at breakfast.
I also spend between $150-200 a fortnight on vegetables (I prefer fresh, not frozen), $100 a fortnight on fruit and around $100-150 a fortnight on meat. I like to buy fruit and veggies on special so my groceries bill fluctuates.

Depending on how you and your family like to eat. I know people who live on cheap unhealthy food like chips and chocolate and only cook dinner and eat chips for lunch and toast for breakfast. A bag of chips here is only $2-3 and that's their lunch. I prefer healthy food therefore so much more expensive. I don't do a lot of baking or anything like that because if I do, it gets wasted because my son won't eat it.

I have often wondered how much families spend on weekly groceries.
It really depends on what you can afford. We have been in both situations where we haven't had to worry about what we spend to more recently really having to budget. I used to spend around $250 per week for family of 4, pre teen kids. I have now started doing a weekly meal plan and got our weekly cost back to around $180 per week. I only buy what I need for each meal plus lunches/baking and it cuts out the crap that you grab while shopping.

All I know is if I don't plan, use leftovers cleverly, and pack lunches for all, we spend WAY too much on food!!! My tricks are using my freezer to our advantage, picking up as many clearance items as possible, buy bulk where possible, avoid most pre made packaged meals, and we allow one supermarket splurge per weekly shop each (I usually get bocconini or a small wheel of cheese!!!)
2 adults, 1 child, plus 1 or 2 extra mouths about 3 times a week, a lot of visitors really!! .Ha!

Fantastic post BTW! :)
