Parents of children who have had a tonsillectomy (just wanting feedback, advice, tips): How old was your child, how long until they were 100% again, what was your child's pain scale like and besides panadol & ice cream did anything else also ease the pain, did your child experience any complications post surgery i.e. bleeding, vomiting blood, any regrets to having the surgery and finally did it improve your child's original condition i.e. throat infections, sleep apnea, dribbling, difficulty swallowing etc. THANKS

Hi! My son was 9 when he had his removed, instead of panadol we used something a bit stronger... Can't remember what it was called.... The specialist did put us onto it tho, and it was available over the counter... He was quite sore to swallow for a week (at least) but after a few days found it bearable. We found with my son that things tasted funny and he wouldn't even eat his favorite icecream, so basically lived on Luke warm home made chicken soup, and flat lemonade (the bubbles "burnt" his throat. He also got quite phlemmy because he was avoiding swallowing, I found by giving him a stack of tissues he was still able to clear his mouth out, at one stage his throat went white, I thought it was thrush, but apparently it was just part of the healing process - very normal. All that being said.... With in 2 weeks he was back at school, he was sleeping better, not snoring (as much) and had heaps more energy, which also transferred to better moods and being a LOT more active, so all things considered, if we had the choice to do it again or not we would still go through it, the initial discomfort was far outweighed with better health for our little man - hope this helps
Hey hun, my child hasn't gone through this op, but I remember it from when I had mine out at age 9. I had no effects from the anaesthetic, vomited blood for a day, and then felt pretty average for a little over a week. I remember feeling very sorry for myself as it was quite painful, but I ate a lot of jelly, lemonade icypoles and soup, tough I preferred anything cold over the soup. It definitely improved my quality of sleep, asthma symptoms reduced and I think after about two weeks I was completely fine. I had my tonsils and adenoids removed together.
My Son had this procedure (& Adnoids) last November, aged 5.
I wanted it to be done before he started school this year.
Definitely a health improvement - no more tonsilitis.
Can still get a sore throat occasionally, but nothing major.
The pain was managable with panadol, there was something stronger he was given by the nurses in the first 24 hours, but after those first 24 hours, he was good - until approx day 10, which ENT did warn me would be painful for him, particularly ears.
mine was about four , pain wasn't too bad but he has a high pain threshold, they HAVE to chew hard stuff like toast and stuff to prevent them bleeding and needing more surgery .. i had to insist on it but you gotta be cruel to be kind . Good luck
Are you thinking of getting Cody's tonsils out Jen?
How often does he get tonsillitis and has your Dr recommended he have them out?
I'm thinking the same way about Hunter but I'm not sure that they'd do it because he doesn't get 'sick' enough.
He often complains of a sore throat and I can see his tonsils are sore but not enough to warrant antibiotics, he often wakes up with bad breath and he talks through his nose quite a bit and breaths through his mouth.
From my perspective, I would say if they are going to do it, get them out.
Mum didn't want me to get mine out when I was younger because she's seen everything that CAN go wrong but I wish she had of because I have no end of issues with them...
Hope you are all well xx
My son was 4 when he had his tonsils and adenoids removed and grommets put in his ears. He was a real little trooper! Woke up a little distressed but after a cuddle and some pain stop he was good. No major complications. He was happily eating a cooked dinner that night and bacon and eggs the next morning. Every child has a different pain threshold. His health improved dramatically once they were out. He stopped snoring and wasn't on a constant course of antibiotics. He was back to his happy self and back at pre school after a week.
