4yo toilet training

4yo toilet training

I have a 4 year 3 month old son. He’s been toilet trained for wee for about 8 months. No matter what I do I can’t seem to get him to poo in the toilet or the potty.

We’ve tried so much, offering rewards, sitting with him, leaving him on this own, giving a book for the toilet, reading stories about toilet training etc. he literally won’t go.

He knows when he needs to poo. Last night he snuck in to his room and put a nappy on. If he doesn’t have a nappy he won’t go for over 2 days and then ends up with a tummy ache.

I just don’t know what to do. Please mums, I’m desperate for advice?

My son did this. We just had to wait it out until we found a pair of undies he loved!! He picked them out and it was his reward for pooping but once he got them and if he pooped in a nappy again they went back in the nig boy draw. He was old enough to understand that as long as he pooped in toilet he kept awesome undies. It was hard and the tears of loosing his cool undies sucked but after about a week he was all good and we got him 10 pairs of cool undies

He'll do it when he's ready. Sorry it's not what you're after but it's true

This is very common with kids this age, if you search this page you'll see the question comes up often. Best I can tell you is he'll get there in his own time.

Below I've pasted a really nice, concise article which may help:

My son did exactly this and the same age. I ended up saying one day that this was the last poo I was ever cleaning up from his nappies. And I said he would have to jump in the shower if he did a poo in his nappy and wash it all off himself.
So that’s what he did for about 4 days. I’d help him strip off and pass him some wipes/face washers ect in the shower but he had to wipe and clean. And he just got sick of doing that and realised how quick and clean pooing on the toilet it

My boy was the same! I finally got it out of him and he was scared of it falling in the toilet! So I drew a picture on some toilet paper and said it will catch his poo - it worked and once he did it once he never looked back!!
