toilet training

so iv toilet training question twice already and i have been so thankful for the responses! this is my first so like everyone I'm clueless :P and its been so good to hear from people who were encouraging as the people around me have all just said he was too young
we started at 9 months, stopping and starting at my own convenience... then this last 4 days gave it another go...
he is 16 months so he has only just started saying 2/3 words but understands a lot.
i let him go nappy free whenever at home... and he tells me when he does a poo on the floor goes and gets his wipes and he has done 2 on the potty. (I'm not sure if he did it on the floor then put it in the potty like i have done to show him where it goes or if it went straight in, but he does try to sit on the potty, just only when he wants.
i not in a big rush but i just want to know tips about getting him to go on the potty ?? i always take him to the toilet with me and he always has and i say , I'm doing a poo
iv even sat on the potty saying poo. lol then he claps and says poo like i did when he did a poo on the potty.
any other tips?
does putting them in cloth nappies help? he recoconizes when he has to go... and when he is going. I'm just trying to direct him to the potty is all, as he started refusing to sit on the toilet which he use to love and use to sit there till he went.

If he can recognise when he is about to go, that's the ideal. So if he is telling you he needs to go then take him to the potty and stay with him. I'd have some favourite books or be prepared to sing some songs etc to amuse him while he sits. If he does wee/poo then have a reinforcer ready (lolly/sticker/ special little toy) whatever it is that excited him and make a really big deal about the wee and poo. I wouldn't bother with cloth nappies if your giving him plenty of time naked or in jocks. As long as he can go a reasonable time between needing to use the toilet it's worth toilet training and he can communicate he needs to go (one word is all it takes but I've trained non verbal children). If they are going too frequently it's not worth it because you end up tied to the potty or toilet.
