Hi Mums,
My son is 2.5 years old. He is a good eater, great drinker but still on regular full cream cow milk bottles. My question is I have had his daycare provider ask if by any chance my son is lactose intolerant, he doesn't have an issue with milk. No pains, no issues in going to the toilet. His poos are always a yellow/green which I was never concerned about as sometimes they are brown. The colour always changes, but his poos are never really solid. They are either mildly sold or soft and go everywhere and squish up his back, they only seem to squish up his back in certain nappies but they are always quite squishy. I have never been concerned, only recently with the comment from someone else. Has anyone else had this? I am going to get a lactose test done in the mean time. But any advice or opinions please.
Poo worry.

Maybe a dumb question but have you tried cutting down his bottles?
He doesn’t really need them anymore and it’s probably more a habit now then anything.
Sorry if you’ve already tried this or are going to but I don’t have advice or experiences other wise
He is only drinking a bottle at night and one during the day. Slowly minimising his milk intake.
My kids occasionally still have a milk before bed but it’s like 5 sips of warm milk for that relaxing warm full feeling so I’d just try cut the day one out for now. And start keeping more eye on his dairy intake, trying to reduce it where you can.
It would be too much dairy intake throughout a day if your son is also having yoghurts, cheeses, cows milk on cereals etc as well as 2 full 240mls+ bottles it could be too much and it could also be an access of fruits causing his soft poos.
Seeing as his poos have never been solid i would just mention it to your doctor next time you see them. But for now I wouldn't be too worried about it as its obviously not bothering him, maybe just try to increase his fiber intake for now and see if that helps it
Yes that's a sign of lactose intolerant. For us, we just needed a few weeks of lactose free milk for their little tummy to recover then was all good again - lactose intolerance can develop from a tummy bug, but they cant recover by themselves thats why the runny poos stays, they need a break from lactose for their tummy to get stronger again.
This is a fairly big indicator that he is. Worth trialing cutting it out.
I'd cut out the bottles. He doesn't need them at that age. Take back his dairy intake and see how that goes. Good luck.
He needs no lactose to recover. Take him to a doctor for proper advice.
Firstly, as a mum of kids with many intolerances and allergies, I find the general knowledge about these things is not often that accurate and so please take care with any advice.
In my experience, it could be any number of things: intolerance to dairy, fructose, salicylate, gluten or histamine or non IgE allergy to something or IBS without a specific cause.
I have found nutritionists specialised in intolerances/allergies/IBS the best source of help. You can always use Skype to have a good one you like.
I hope you can figure it out, as from what I’ve learned there’s a 48hr window of delayed reactions to things so it makes it tricky to catch! Journaling symptoms and food, medication, drink, viruses, environmental allergens, fragrance/chemical can help. Goodluck 🙂
At his age, that is a lot of milk that he doesn’t even need. I would go cold turkey on the bottles, my 3 year old was the same until 6 months ago and I just cut out the bottles and now he has regular solid poo. That much milk, even though you might not think it’s a lot, is too much.
