One wage!

To the people say they live off one wage, could you please tell me what it is per fortnight (anonymously). I will be going on maternity leave at the end of the year and am struggling to figure out how to live on my husbands wage. Side note he works away mon to fri has to pay own living expenses and fuel etc along with our house repayments and living expenses at home.

Currently on about 2700 a month. Different for everyone, but when you have no choice you make it work. Look at your budget and be ruthless with it, hack at it like a sugar cane worker.

We live off $3500 month (2 adults, 1 teenager) plus $400 FTB. We rent, run 2 cars (fully owned), have private school fees and other living expenses. We have no debt and live comfortable.

My husband brings in $1300 a fortnight with 3 kids. $280 a week rent, I'm not going to lie we are poor but get by. I just don't eat sometimes or have toast, we don't really eat meat but I always have fruit and vegetables for the kids. Say good bye to Sweets, beauty products and nre clothes. Say hell to repairing the clothes you have over and over and wearing shoes until they fall apart. You will be fine just put you baby first and give them what they need the rest works out. Plus loosing baby weight is easy with no money for junk food, dairy or meat so win win.

My husband brings in about $3300 a fortnight and I’m currently on mat leave but receiving PPL of $1200 a fortnight. Without that it’d be a struggle. We currently have 2 mortgages though - Which I’m rectifying (selling one).

Approximately 3k a fortnight. Not including overtime. One income family with 2 children, 2 dogs ,1 cat. Sit down and look at your finances. Also included mortgage, insurance and car repayments. No family tax or benefits. For us. We have been also at the stage where we got 1200 a fortnight early when the kids were younger. We have also moved and changed jobs a couple of times for better opportunities.

We are on $2600 before tax per fortnight. That pays our mortgage, fuel for 2 cars, private health insurance, feeds 4 kids and 2 adults, kindy fees for one child, $500 per child per year for sport, and when required, therapy for kids (2 with undiagnosed ASD, so we do speech/occupational/vision therapy, and 2 who need occupational/physical therapy for injury rehab. All up, usually one appointment per fortnight)

My secret is to buy from the farms where possible, bulk buy, shop the specials, menu plan and stick to it. Don't buy pre packaged food, cooking from scratch is cheeper. Our food budget is $300 a fortnight and I often have a little money leftover.
