Circumcision for older boys

We've recently been advised our son will very likely need to be circumcised as his foreskin is not retracting and his hole is too small and fused to his glands. We're currently using steroid cream to try and stretch it but the doctor has said this has a 10-15% success rate and he's 99% sure our son will need surgery.

He's 10 so he's definitely going to remember the healing process and the pain. I'm pretty worried about what's ahead of us and would really appreciate stories of what to expect. What to expect when healing, how you dealt with changing dressings and keeping the area clean? Any troubles with the toilet? I understand everyone heals at different rates but how long did it take your son to heal?

* We've left it this long because his GP's have told us over the years that it should naturally retract before puberty. We've only recently started having problems with urination, prior to December 2017 he had zero problems and never had an infection (he's been close to getting infections since December though) it also took a couple of months for the Women's and Children's Hospital to see him.

My husband got circumcised four years ago. After a life time of issues with his foreskin he decided to get it done while he was having a vesectomy. He got completely knocked out the surgery only took a short amount of time. He was sore for a few days after but found warm salt water baths helped with the pain and healing. He didn't need anything stronger than neurofen as pain relief. Hope this helps

Thank you for your reply. Will certainly keep salty baths in mind when the time comes!

My hubby had his done at age 8 due to infection. Whilst he remembers the surgery, it hasn't scarred him at all - he was relieved to not have pain any longer. Healing was about a week and just some panadol to get by.

Another thing to remember is your body doesn't actually remember pain as such :) the thought of it can be scary/remember the thought of the pain but you don't actually remember the pain you felt!

Thank you for your reply, you're absolutely right regarding the pain. I'm sure when my son is older he'll remember he was sore for a bit but he won't feel it. That eases my worries some, thank you again. :-)
