Has anyone had any experience at Lady Cilento Hospital with a 6 year old having a circumcision (for medical reasons)?
Just trying to find out any advise on preparing my son for it, recovery times, what side effects to look for with anaesthetic.

Lady Cilento is fantastic! Neither of my sons have been circumcised but my younger son has complex health needs so has had multiple anaesthetics. When you receive the letter with surgery date you will also receive fasting details. If my son needs to fast from 2am I don't wake him to give him something to eat before fasting. I need my sleep so I have the energy to get through the day of surgery. Plus the longer he fasts the emptier his stomach is when he has the anaesthetic. Mum or dad can usuallygown up to walk or carry the child into theatre (unless it's outside general surgical hours - nights/weekends). Afterwards they're usually pretty good about getting mum or dad into recovery as soon as possible. Post-op care varies depending on the procedure but the nurses will let you know what's needed. My son usually spikes a temp after an anaesthetic and will vomit if he doesn't get panadol as soon as his temp starts rising, but everyone reacts differently. He will be monitored constantly in recovery before being transferred to a ward, so if there is concern they'll know straight away. The calmer you are the calmer your son will be. Make sure you take distractions for both you and you son, plus food and drinks for you once he's gone into surgery.
