What method of contraception do you use?

Hi IMs, I have a questions about contraception. My husband is 32 and I am 29, we have 3 beautiful children and I'm pretty sure our family is complete. Our baby is 9 months old and I've just recently got my period back. I don't want to go on any type of pill, for 2 reasons it makes me crazy and I am very forgetful! We don't like condoms as they make me itchy. Hubby has said he will get a vasectomy but I'm not sure I want that because even though I'm 90% sure we are done, there's still the thought in the back of my mind to have just one more. Then on the other hand I think about how id feel if I was pregnant and is be mortified. Currently we just use the pull out method. Any discussion welcome.

Firstly stop using that method! It's totally unreliable. If it was reliable we wouldn't need other contraceptives. It's probably only worked this long because you haven't been ovulating. If you really don't want another baby there are many types of contraceptives you could be trying. The Nuva ring, depo shot, implanon, and IUDs. Speak to your GP and they can go through all the options. I personally like the Nuva ring. You can insert it yourself and stays in for 3 weeks so no worrying about taking tablets and really easy to remove if it doesn't suit you. Also it has a really small hormonal component so I don't get any funny reactions to it. I would be putting up with condoms until you can get it sorted out. Taking the morning after pill on a regular basis is not a good idea health wise.

If you talk to a doctor, I'm sure he may recommend another brand on condoms that may not itch for you. And although you may not like the pill, talking to a doctor about it may be a good idea. Pulling out is the worst thing you can do and not a form of contraceptive at all - that's basic, grade eight sex education.

Talking to a professional may help work out a contraception arrangement for you, that doesn't mean "flicking the switch" for good.

I get the depo shots! For me I don't have a problem with needles so I love it. Every 3 months and you don't have to worry. Plus I never get a period.

Pull out worked for us for 6 years Iv gotten pregnant on the pill three times lol
I would watch my cycle two and I knew when I was ovulating or about to and we would either I stain or be ultra careful that week , I hate taking chemicle a to alter my body's natural flow and always feel healthier not taking anything - pull out can be reasonably effective if you are in tune with your body and know when you ovulate

I have the Implanon implant. It is very effective and inexpensive. It also has few side effects associated with it. I would thoroughly recommend it!

I hate the pill too! It makes me feel... Just yuk! It got to the point where I would struggle to swallow it because I knew how shit I would feel! I have just gotten a script for the Mirina.. Haven't had it put in yet though so can't really comment on it yet, but it seems like the best option for me. Apart from getting my tubes tied but the doctor is reluctant because I am still in my 20's (yet 100% sure I don't want anymore babies!)

I'm so forgetful taking the pill and implanon caused weight gain and moodiness I was recommended the nuvaring. We hate condoms too so It's a great alternative and I have had no side effects. I have used it the last year and can't recommend it high enough. Research it on the net. It's not widely used in Australia yet but easy to get on a script.

The pill made me crazy too. I got the Mirena IUD after my son was born and it was HORRIBLE. I had it in for about 9 months and in that time I had awful backaches, at least monthly migraines (curl up in a ball in the walk in robe and hope to die migraines), I was insanely irrational, suicidal at times, gained weight, lost a lot of hair, My periods were longer, irregular and REALLY heavy. The strings pulled up so although it was still where it should be I had to have it removed in day surgery. My ob/gyn also refused to acknowledge that my symptoms could be related to the IUD but miraculously all but the crazy, irregular and heavy periods were completely gone once it was removed. My periods are only just now getting back to normal (nearly 6 years later). Most people I know personally who have used the Mirena have had great results and no real problems but a quick google search shows a lot of others that had the same issues I did so it's something to be aware of if you go that route.

You can buy latex free condoms, we use skyn brand there's more variety than other brands. You can try an IUD, injections, or there's implanon (the rod is implanted in your arm which lasts 3 years).
