child being picked on

My 7 year old has had an ongoing head lice problem this year. we are treating her with conditionet every second day. She has been being picked on at school. yesterday she informed me that her cusion who is 8 has been telling everybody not to play with her and she no longer has any friends. Her mother is ignoring my requests to talk to her about it. The school doesn't want to do anything and I am lost where to go from here. Any advice on my next step?

They're picking on her because of her lice problem, yes?
That's awful!
Is it possible that the cousins mum told her not to play with her? I know lots of mums at my school say "don't play with that kid, they have nits!" So the problem might be starting with the her mother.
If the school refuse to deal with the bullying issue and the lice issue then take it to the education department.

this is my post. thank you for answer.
they are picking on her for the lice. I don't think it's coming from mum as she will happily look after her for weekends or drop her kids off for a play. the school will not exclude kids with them or help in any way.

Ok im in a similar situation with cousins picking on my daughter. I have asked her mother (my sister) already to put a stop to it if it happens again i am past the point of caring im going to call my niece out on it (shes 12 my daughter is 8). Maybe you should do the same.

As a child if I knew another kid had nits I just did not want to play with them or be near them. I myself did not want to get it but I certainly never openly picked on the kid, I just avoided them (which I guess is bullying in a way).

Is there anyway you can keep your daughter home from school for a week or so and treat the headlice problem in one hit as opposed to every second day? It's obviously coming from other kids in the school who are also affected but if you can get rid of them you're not contributing to the vicious cycle. It might help he with friends too :)

thanks for reply.
we get rid of them completely during holidays but first day back they are back. there are kids in her class that have them to the point I can see them and the school will not step in.
we have tried all chemical treatments and prevention sprays without results.
it's very frustrating. however if I kept her home every time she would never be at school

I wonder why the school won't step in, kids having lice to this extent is a health concern! Those poor kids must be so uncomfortable.

Talk to your daughter about it and see if she's willing to cut her hair short. There's heaps of funky punky haircuts that are super cool and short hair is a billion times easier to keep cooties out of. I had the same problem, luckily I have a boy so I just started shaving his head.

Have a quiet word in the cousin's ear yourself.

Using the little metal comb is the only way to get rid of them, and you have to do it regularly. Apply a cheap hair conditioner and comb through the alternate weeks when you're not applying the proper head lice lotion. Then you keep hair tied up and hair sprayed to the hilt

Hi,
Have you tried coconut oil? If you cover your daughters hair in it and then cover it for the night with a shower cap. We use this method and it works. We haven't had them since.
As for your niece, if nothing is being done about it at home, I would take it to the school and let them deal with it.

I find this hard to believe. I have had several notes home from my child's school about headlice and as a teacher have seen many children sent home with headlice. So if there were children there the school would be doing something.

What have you said to the school ? What have they said to you?

I feel for your daughter. I remember one year I had the same problem, waste length hair. Total nightmare. It was the 90's, though, so a few mums got fed up and treated every kid one day at school. Can't really do that anymore! Best thing was tying hair up very tightly - plaits, braids. Lots of gel.

As for the bullying - if it's happening at school, they have to fix it. Contact the teacher & principal via email referring to the bullying policy. Give them a time frame (a few days) to get back to you with a detailed plan. Tell them you will approach the relevant education department.
