Is there a 'right' way to wash baby clothes? Some people say it's fine to just put them through the washing machine, yet have heard some insist u need to hand wash them with special baby soap flakes - what do u do?

Who in their right mind has time to hand wash baby clothes when they have a newborn lol. Baby stuff in a load on its own with a bit of napisan or sensitive washing liquid is perfectly fine (if it's been puked on or pooped on probably a good idea to soak first).
Put them in the washing machine and press start like every other load...
The only stuff I washed carefully was the hand knitted stuff.
Most baby clothes were knotted by hand in the old days so they couldn't be machine washed.
I haven't seen hand knitted baby stuff since my son was born over 20 years ago. So your mum and grandma probably hand washed there baby stuff
I just washed baby's clothes separately with sensitive detergent and a extra rinse. Nothing special. I probably used less than the recommended detergent too
I do nothing different at all. My newborn daughters clothes is washed with everyone else's clothes with the same clothes powder and fabric softener. If she showed any signs of sensitive skin or reactions I would wash seperately and with sensitive washing powder.
My child health nurse told me to try just using normal stuff and do nothing different or there's a chance she may react when I swap to normal clothes powder.
I have a 9kg washing machine and do washing for me, my son and my daughter every second day so washing doesn't pile up, her clothes would not even touch the sides, she would run out of clothes before filling my washing machine lol
